Gaston Ramirez
Nigel Adkins believes the performances of Maya Yoshida and Gaston Ramirez gives Saints plenty of hope for the future despite a 6-1 beating at Arsenal.
The new signings only joined up with their teammates for the first time at the end of last week after international games in Japan and Uruguay respectively.
Yoshida was pressed into a first-half appearance at the Emirates Stadium after Jos Hooiveld went off with a calf injury while Ramirez replaced Steven Davis at half time.
Adkins was pleased with what he saw and excited about the prospect of fielding them once they have had to recover from their travels and settle into life at the club.
He said: “We lost Jos Hooiveld after a period of time with a calf injury and Maya has only had one training session with us having just come back from Japan and so he was thrown right in at the deep end.
“I must say I thought he did ever so well as he grew into the game but it’s not easy because he’s got to get to know his teammates.
“The positive side of it is that we brought Gaston Ramirez in who trained with us for the first time on Friday night having been in Uruguay and you can just see what a quality football player he is going to be for us at Southampton so we are pleased about that.
“If anything we have had the addition of a few more players, we have a good week’s training lined up where we can get the group together in preparation for the next game and that’s where we’ve got to start now looking to pick up the points at home at St Mary’s.
“The crowd was superb again, singing the whole way through, the crowd was superb at St Mary’s and then again here and although the scoreline wasn’t what we wanted when you saw some of the play in the second half we actually did keep good possession of the football but the scoreline is beyond you and it is about winning.”
Hooiveld had been touch and go for the game after struggling with calf for a few days but was declared fit to play.
However, on this occasion it didn’t hold up and Saints now face an anxious wait to see how serious the problem is.
“We will have to see,” said a rueful Adkins.
“It is a calf injury and he couldn’t continue, he had to come off, so we will assess that one.
“Maya was thrown straight in at the deep end not really knowing any of the players and I must say he grew in confidence as the second half went on.”

The pace of the Premiership is something to take in to consideration, as well as the language barrier and the fact he's only had one training session with all his new team mates.
He's assured, plays nice football, and can bring harmony to our back four.
With the addition of a new goalkeeper (Freebie), and recalling Aaron Martin we should have enough to see us through until January in my opinion.
Our season started at City, not next week, the last 4 games are essential experience for us as a squad going forward.

While I still have every respect for NA and NC I do believe they slipped up in not strengthing us in defence. But, hey, where all learning, and I fully support them.
Big respect to Theo and The Ox for saluting us fans at the end on Saturday.
We have to beat Villa now, and I'm sure, if we get behind them and remain positive, we will.

The usual doom merchants will scatter their bad seed and no doubt pick up momentum as the week passes. Boredom does that to people.
I don't care. I'm just glad that the true support is as strong as ever and that the many positive things that are happening at this club are acknowledged and appreciated.
Adkins, you are a top man, stay firm, hold on to those principles. The undoubted quality of the teams you create will be recognised by the end of this season.

I appreciate his efforts over the past couple of years however he's not good enough for the premiership. we paid good money for Gazzinga so use him, or as previously stated, two very good goalies, both with international experience!
In regards to the game, it was disappointing we didn't play like we did against United. Punch didn't turn up. Lallana and Lambert were played out of the game and Fox's positioning was dreadful.
Big step up by all for the Villa game.
In my opinion we need to drop the 4-5-1 and play 4-4-2. two forwards & two wide men covering our full backs. The 4-5-1 simply doesn't work. On saturday, when Lambert did win the ball there was no one there next to him to knock it to.
Personally i'd drop Fox and play either Dickson or Shaw. He's been at fault for too many goals this season.
Also, with the 4-5-1 why do we have so many attackers on the bench!

Two of our first three games gave us a good idea of what we can do against the top teams, and the new players need to play themselves in, and the investments we have made WILL make our team a better team.
Stability and strength needs to come from the spine though from Keeper through to the striker
So Ricky, Ramirez/Davis, Yoshida/Jos, and Kelvin need to step up.

Gazzaniga has a great passing range and his distribution looks good, I just think he lacks the experience at the moment, but you have to start somewhere and hopefully he'll be a bargain buy and surprise us all.
I back all the players, but we have to be playing the best 11 possible, and thats based on form as well as ability.
Perhaps we should play 4 at the back (NC, MY, JH, LS ), 2 holding midfielders (JC, MS), 2 wingers (AL, GR), 1 central attacking midfielder (JR or EM) just behind 1 striker (RL). with Lallana, Ramirez swapping sides during the game.
This should giving the defence better cover too, and the players on the bench would be amazing as impact players!
But we're all armchair managers aren't we? lol!!
I'm sure Nigel will adapt and come out of this stronger, which means the team and the club will be in a much better place!

However there are many games coming up which on paper are more evenly matched and with our attacking and ball quality we will certainly see some points ticking up.
As for goalies - pretty much every team is saying they need a new goalie - we have what we have and yes KD is a bit small etc but let's just get on with it. Play to his strengths and defend as a team.
Villa will not be an easy game - we need a clean sheet more than a victory right now. I'd rather see us 0-0 next sat or winning 1-0 and seeing that some training ground work has gone into the defensive side of things. A solid defence gives the midfield confidence to play in front of them so let's re-group, analise what went wrong, fix it and then come out fighting.
We should be like Ben Ainsley now - angry - very very angry.

We need a world class defensive coach to train best tactics to our def and midfield.
KD would seem like a reasonable keeper in a team that did not leak so badly, at this level with sustained attacks faults are exposed..ironically the worst defenses need the best goalkeepers, regrettably money talks and therefore it does not work that way.. bugger.

What we can do however is employ an ex premier player like Tony Adams to train up our defence.
After seeing Ramirez's second half performance I am convinced he is just the boy to turn our fortunes round.
Another thought, apart from us there still another six teams in the premier league that have not won a match so far this year.

Having seen many keepers, I am concerned about his lack of height, his angles for covering the near post and his decision making. When he does things on instinct he is a great shot stopper, but when he has to make decisions to carry out an aspect of defence he seems to dither.
A lot of this was not apparent when he had a good defence in front of him in League 1 and the Championship.
Artur Boruc is available after being released by Fiorintina and is now a free agent. A number of Premiership managers are looking at him. It's time for Saints to have a punt.

I think Jack Cork next to Morgan in the middle will give the defence extra cover. That said Gervinho's first goal was almost identical to Tevez's, Kelvin beaten at the near post diving the wrong way. Also the free kick although hit well was in the middle of the goal, I would expect a premiership goalkeeper to have saved it. So goalkeeping is an issue. I also think that we fail to track runners, Arsenal were getting behind us time after tiome because no one tracked back. Ward Prowse is a great prospect but is still learning his craft. I think middle four had to be Davis,Cork, Morgan and Adam. Ramirex should play just behind Ricke at SMS and either Jay Rod or Lee away. I think we need to start defending from the front and with the best will in the world I do not think Rickie has the mobility to play that role. Despite Adam being made captain and getting into the England squad I am still not convinced he will make a great impression in the Premiership.I know I will get slated for the last comment but I think everyone of our players has to prove they are good enough to play at this level, the gap between the Championship and the Premiership is immense. Switch off for a second and you will get punished, we have seen that in each of the 4 games to date.

I've googled Craig Gordon and he does sound a class act but his career has been destroyed by injuries, a massive list! Not sure if that's the way forward.
So when on the attack the ball is pressed in the opposition half if possession is lost which gives one full back the time to get back and create a temporary back 3 until the other one gets back to make it a back 4. Risk is without really quick full backs you get caught with only two at the back.
If you play it without attacking full backs or with only one attacking full then it can become turgid if the wide mid-fielders can't get by the opposition full backs.
Our problem is our central mid-fielders aren't quick enough against quick passing 1 and 2 touch teams such as Arsenal. This puts pressure on our "not up to PL standard" CB's and LB regardless of the formation.
We will have to see what happens against the likes of Villa and Everton when the new boys are on the park from the start. Will we have more of the ball in mid-field with Ramireze playing which will relieve the pressure on the defence? And will the defence be stiffened and under less pressure with the introduction of Yoshida?
And would it be better to start with Rodriguez who is younger and more mobile than Ricky and would be better at defending from the front. Then introduce Ricky in the second half after we had done a containing job on them?
Who knows? Answers on a postcard please to Confucious who will give you a more entertaining answer than me.
In the meantime stick with 4-5-1 and see what the new players are like.

In fact, why not list the many goals you think he has been responsible for, so far this season.
From what I could see, on Saturday, 3 goals came from our right side, against Clyne.
1 goal was direct from a free kick, another from our new centre back being turned and the last one as a result of the ball reaching Walcott from a defensive block, from our right side.
With regards to the 433 we have been playing, IMO it is up to Puncheon and Lallana to get back and be the first line of defence, when crosses are being rained in.
What I have seen is wide players getting behind Punch and Lallana, then they have all the time in the world to cross the ball, whilst the full backs rush out to try and block them.
Unfortunately, there are too many fans that can't see this, so they just slag off the easy target, ie Fox, for not being close enough to the player Lallana should be marking.
I dare say Clyne will get the same treatment when he has been here for a few months, unless the wide midfield players start doing what they should be doing.

every story gets the same posts from them!
KD is too old and not good enough,
the defence is weak and has not been strengthend, and they are the only ones who saw it! why cant everyone else.
NA will be gone by this time next week.
NC does not know what hes doing and would not spend "HIS" money.
we should get new players in now.
we will be down by christmas and you saw it here first!
oh and ted bates and big mac are gods and would have stood up to NC its a shame Adkins hasnt got the balls to!
can we just get a few things straight once and for all!
1 we cant buy or loan anyone! i know, but posting that we need to strengthen everyday wont change that
2, we brought in 2 international defenders in the window, a japanese CB and a English u21 RB ( i think you call that strengthening!).
3, yes we have let in a lot of goals, but that will change when the new players bed in. KD is not too old and once the defence gets sorted (yoshida) will look a lot better in goal.
4 saying NC wouldnt spend money is just wrong we spent £30mill on players this summer.
5, its NOT NC`s money!
6, if we get relegated then so be it! what is the other option spending more than weve got in a vain attempt to stay up? who else did that and look at them now!
7, no one on here knows who else we tried but failed to sign. so dont keep saying they didnt try to get the right players.
8, no one on here knows the working relationship between NC and NA. dont keep posting your assumption as facts!
still could be worse we could be poopey.
i think, and this is just my opinion and not fact, that NA is safe for a while, NC would have known that the first few games where tough.
and if gaston plays against villa from the start and is as good as he was against the arse then surely we must be looking good for some points.

Fewer variables and for me its the way forward until like I say they all get to know each other and then the formation adapts accordingly.

Actually I blame Guly. He's at fault for everything. We've lost all because of him. Oh no, he didn't play on Saturday!
I blame the weather. If it's raining, how are we supposed to win?! I mean...
No, maybe the ref. He shouldve given us more, plus a pen against Man U.
It's not fair!
We can't blame anyone or anything! The team as a whole have got to do their job and we have to support them! They'll take a while to adapt to this pace, style and gel. I was pee'd off Saturday but hey, we've got to get on with it.
Dust themselves down and on to the next one!

Many people had us losing by 6 goals against Man City, so overall I don't think we are much worse off than expected when we saw the fixtures. OK, we all thought we should have got something from Wigan, to be fair it was not the lack of good play. Also, whilst Wigan are a side that we should look to beat, they have been on a great run leading from the back of last season where they were one of the top form teams.
I think we all looked at Man City, Man U and Arsenal as damage limitation, if we could get points then great, if not, lets try not to get thrashed. I think there will be a few teams that come off the back of playing the teams we have with worse goals conceded.
What I will state is that we can score goals and when the new signings settle we will look in better shape. We have got some good attacking flair, there are a lot of teams in the league that would like what we have in creativity and attacking options. Whilst many will point at our defense, we have actually signed two superb players to strengthen this.
Our side reminds me of the 80's under Chris Nicholl!! If the opponent score 3 we must score 4!!
Anyway, I still think NA will get us winning games..
For now, I would rather lose to Arsenal away 6-1 than lose at home to Walsall 2-1 any day of the week!!! ;0)

IMO away from home we need someone up front who can hold the ball up to give the defence time to regroup and pass the ball onto a midfield player coming onto the ball.
Again IMO a lone striker 'running the channels' and 'working across the front' will soon get tired and despondent - AKA Rooney for the odd England performance. Five across the middle or a striker playing in the hole will work playing off a target striker who holds up and plays the way he is facing.

There are no players directly at fault, the issue is that if you have full backs that get forward like Clyne and Fox the wide midfield players need to cover, not get drawn in to the same attack. We always get caught out by counter-attacking sides e.g. Reading, Wigan because rather than interchanging on the wings, we come forward as a unit, with moves often started from the full backs. Saints have nearly always had attack minded full backs, particularly on the left, Bridge, Le Saux etc., but in the past the midfield have covered better Marsden (football genius) for example.

Yoshida is going to need a little time to settle, but when he does he's going to be a really good signing for us.
There's several on the market, but Artur Boruc and Craig Gordon spring to mind.

Against Arsenal he was at times playing as a third CB whilst in my opinion (and that's all this is, my own opinion) he should have been tight up against the Ox. Perhaps this wasn't explained to him by NC or the coaches. Tbh Jenkinson did nothing, and adam should have been covering Fox. This was evident in the second half when there was so much space for Ox and then Walcott.

the three goals that we conceded from the right, one was an own goal from clyne which was lucky, one was an own goal from Jos which in my opinion shouldn't have gone past Kelvin and the third was that punch wasn't tracking and therefore the player was able to skip through clyne as he was marking 2 players.
I was dismayed on saturday that our players didn't seem to want to go forward, against united punch and lallana and clyne were screaming up the pitch, but against Arsenal we got the ball and played side to side in our midfield.
We were so bad that we made Gervinho look good!

If 4-4-2 is so good why does it get slated so much by pundits? It's almost treated with contempt and as being beneath decent leagues and international sides. Infact much is made of the success teams like Barcelona and the Spanish national side achieve wthout a 'recognised' striker at times.
They also, especially Barcelona, play a carousel in mid-field where all the players spin round in a circle and are interchangeable with the strikers and on occasion the full backs. That's the reason Torres doesn't get many starts for Spain, because he is only a striker.
They play a variation of the Dutch Total football that emerged in the 70's but with shorter more mobile two footed players. Swansea try to play like this, so do Arsenal, as we saw.
But you need exceptional players to do it well and very few teams have got them. Its what Rogers wants to do at Liverpool. We are a long way off of it.

Fail to plan, plan to fail. We really needed to strengthen as far back as last January as we were playing with what was pretty much league 1 team.
The new players have had no time to gel, have missed pre season friendlies and will take the best part of 3 months to settle if we are lucky. Who is to blame? If Adkins is sacked surely whoever appointed him should be held to account. Are the players signed Adkins choice? Why weren't more defenders signed? I do not want the manager to go, nor the
quality we can produce to suffer, nor do we want to become perpetual manager and staff changers...let us be clear success in the main has been enjoyed by clubs with stability and continuity,, the old Liverpool, SAF reign with MUFCO, Arsenal and Wenger are always there or thereabouts...
Team has learnt a lot these past 4 games, that will bode well as the new players get to grips with the pace and the speed of the EPL.
Impressed with Maya and Gaston, second half on Saturday was much, much better.

Very worrying.
Adkins position is under threat with talk of 2 games to get it sorted, this pressure will be felt by the players.
Does any one know what is going on behind the scenes and is Adkins able to attract 'big time players?
1 thing for sure, Villa is a must win game.
Whilst it may appear to be good business to not get bullied around and get a player for the 'right price', this could be detremental to getting the players in early to jell with the team or even cutting your nose off to spite your face and not get the player at all (aka Buttner and co.)
Just a thought..
There is such a thing as false economy and if saving money costs us our premier league place then is it worth it?
Pre season friendlies were a waste IMO. Sharpe, Hammond, Richards etc figured and are gone or are not good enough for this league. Every 1 knew we needed descent defensive cover, even ex players were writing about it in papers but did we get it and is it in time? I'm not sure if Adkins is able to attract players but they needed to be signed earlier like I mentioned as far back as January window. If Adkins goes I don't know where it leaves us and more worringly it will prove we have a dictator as chairman.......... Only time will tell

I totally agree with others in that we need a better goalkeeper and a left back, this was evident towards the end of last season when we " scraped " through to an automatic promotion place.
I just, genuinely, hope that, great chap, NA can cope at the highest level, time will tell BUT how much time?

It was widely publicised that we needed players, its patently obvious we didnt acquire them in time for the season to start.
Though I am very happy with the players brought in, and my expectations for our start to the season (3 of the best teams in the league) have been met so far, I am very optmimistic about our season still.

That's fine I guess, but I think he needs to shout at the ball a lot more.

Yoshida is going to need a little time to settle, but when he does he's going to be a really good signing for us.
There's several on the market, but Artur Boruc and Craig Gordon spring to mind.

But we must be realistic, if you look at any football club there are players that they tried to sign but for one reason or another they couldn't.
Our club need our support, we have come a long way in a short space of time, it was never going to be easy in this league. But if we support and stick together we can succeed.
I for one am astounded that anyone can't help but be impressed with how far we have come in a very short space of time. We just need to show a little bit of faith and support for the people that have achieved it for us.

I expect a hugely different team to run out on Saturday and like McDonut down the road I think NA needs to rest his first choice keeper, KD has had a mare , well 4 mares to be exact.
3 points this Saturday will make all the difference. Great team, great supporters and great times to come.

We all knew the start of the Season with the fixtures was going to be tough - that said the performance especially in the first half against Arse was nowhere near good enough.
NIGEL AND THE TEAM - you have a lot of f@cking work to do and SAINTS SUPPORTERS DEMAND RESULTS in the next two games.
MAKE IT HAPPEN !!!
There are very fine lines between success and failure. We should have beaten manure and we need to be fired up to smash the next two teams coming to St Mary's.
after a raucous start - that sort of performance during the first half against arse was unacceptable and the travelling supporters DEMAND more.
An apology is not needed - just the fire and FIGHT and the belief to WIN.
We can turn this around, In the Championship we used to WIN at home and then go away to lose until we got the Winning formula and started to WIN WIN WIN.
tthere is a lot of quality in the Southampton Squad and there is a lot of money being paid out week on week.
Now get working together and get your f"@cking act together and never ever play and perform like we have just seen.
FIGHT AND WIN.
THERE IS NO FEAR (no scared rabbits like in the first half) and THERE IS NO SURRENDER.
WE DEMAND SUCCESS.
WE ARE THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON and we will avenge the crushing defeat when we play at St Mary's and dispatch wenger away to another meaningless season.
if we get them in the Cup - we will knock the for six.
WE RULE IN THE SOUTH
we will be out in the pubs and streets of SOUTHAMPTON and we will punish our next opponents.

The important question now is how long Adkins will be given by The Don. I'm in the camp hat thinks NA needs until Christmas at the very least, and in fact I'd like to see him get two more seasons even if we DO get relegated. I rate him in the long-term win category. There is probably no manager tha could do a better job than Nige in this situation, and he has shown that he can land and integrate quality players in L1 and the Cship, let's see if he can do it in the Prem.
But we all know that cortese is shrewd, and he will be tempted by some of the premiership journeymen -- not just the ones on the market today, but the ones that will be sacked soon enough.
My money is on Mark Hughes to be manager by February. And it will be a catastrophe!
Stay with the Adkins Diet, NC!

I have long been a critic of K. Davis. I have been shouted down especially when we were in League 1.

I admit also, that I was not happy with the performance of Fonte during the Wigan game and I did make my feelings known.
However, I do try as much as possible to back the players we have. Also, I am not daft enough to think running a football club is easy. I have heard most chairman and managers say they lost out on deals for players that they had targeted during the window, it is not like doing a deal in Football Manager on the PC!
I just take issue with people that come on talking about players we should have signed. But we did sign some great quality in the summer and unfortunately as seems to be the way most of the deals were done late, but that is often the way the window works. I am sure Liverpool would have expected a striker, but deals fell through... As I say, I don't know the ins and outs of the signing of players process, but there are a lot of hurdles to get over and it is not possible to get all the targets.
I think it is well documented that NA & NC tried to sign a Buttner and various other left backs and central defenders, but the deals never went through. It happens, there is nothing you can do about it, the window closes and all clubs have to make do with what they have.
One thing is for sure, we have signed some quality this summer and they will bed in. I am just amazed that people are so down on Saints after just four games, especially when 3 of the games were against top sides. I want us to win as much as anyone, but I am also realistic enough to know we are not going to find it easy against any side in this league.
Anyway, we all have one thing in common, we support Saints. So whilst the team are on the pitch I am positive all supporters will do just that. We will sing and shout and try to be the 12th man. We will give the players confidence and they will respond, that I am sure. If things go wrong then we can worry about it after the game, but ultimately we have to let the management run the club and make the decisions, we can't and should never do that.
Let's just get behind the side, because this is the team we have until January, like it or not. I hope also that NA gets a chance to prove himself and that Nicola is a little more patient than some fans on here.
Come on you Saints!

so our poor results are all down to 1/2 players? Davies and Fox. oh no i forgot Guly because if he hadnt been drink driving he wouldnt have been dropped on sat and we would have won!
Davies has been in goal for every prem game this season so must be to blame for all the goals! do you not think that sometimes teams score goals that keepers cant do anything about? especially the best strikers and players in the world. yes kelv hasnt had the greatest start to the year but to single him out is a bit over the top!
all the moaners ( you can include youself if you like, thats up to you) have moved from blaming guly to fox and davies!
we have changed as a club over the last 10 or so years, we are now a club that has come to want success, yes we have had some over the last 3 years but now things have changed. to say that we were beating manure and manc so we should have won is rather naive to say the least!
some people think we should have changed the entire squad because L1 and champ players arent up to it, well that worked wonders for qpr last year.
please accept that i am not just having a go at you and its not personal, i am just fed up with the same posts by the same people, we should drop kd and fox and buy new players! we cant we just cant. and free agents are free agents for a reason!

Against Manure he allowed the crosses to come in. Valencia had the beating of him all day. This was evident in the second half when there was so much space for Ox and then Walcott.
dmaceymacleod wrote:So, how many of Arsenal's goals are you blaming Fox for?
southamptonwayne wrote:Davis was dreadful against Arsenal. To be beaten at your near post at this level (or any!) is absolutely criminal and he's been beaten twice in four games!
Seedhouse the Unrepentant wrote:No recall available for AM then?? Shame, because he's not a bad defender, has pace, and filled in well at centre back when required.
southamptonwayne wrote:Martin is out on a season long loan not a short term loan where he can be recalled. Please name the 'freebie' keeper you have in mind?
Yoshida is going to need a little time to settle, but when he does he's going to be a really good signing for us.
There's several on the market, but Artur Boruc and Craig Gordon spring to mind.
I dare say Clyne will get the same treatment when he has been here for a few months, unless the wide midfield players start doing what they should be doing.
the three goals that we conceded from the right, one was an own goal from clyne which was lucky, one was an own goal from Jos which in my opinion shouldn't have gone past Kelvin and the third was that punch wasn't tracking and therefore the player was able to skip through clyne as he was marking 2 players.
I was dismayed on saturday that our players didn't seem to want to go forward, against united punch and lallana and clyne were screaming up the pitch, but against Arsenal we got the ball and played side to side in our midfield.
We were so bad that we made Gervinho look good!
Everyone knew this year would be tough, everyone knew that the first 4 games would be tough and hopefully we pick up some points against Villa.
Fox made one error against Man City, leading to their 3rd goal.
Tevez's "goal" was illegal, plus it came as a result of him getting away from Fonte NOT Fox.
And Dzeko's goal came from a corner on our right, with the ball being nowhere near Fox.
What Man Utd goals are you blaming him for?
The first goal came from a cross from a position where a midfield player (Lallana) should have been closing it down, which proves the point I made about the full backs being exposed. Plus Clyne slipped when he tried to get to it. Fox did what all full backs would have done. He faced up to the crosser without giving him the option to go past him. Unfortunately Lallana didn't get back and help before the cross came in. NOT Fox's fault.
The 2nd came following a corner that was cleared out wide, with Ward Prowse (I think) being left to mark 2 people. Fox was in the box where he should have been, so cannot be blamed for the cross coming in. The next nearest player to W-Prowse was Guly, who started to go out wide but stopped, allowing Utd to have a 2 on 1 situation. NOT Fox's fault.
The 3rd Man Utd goal came from poor marking on the right side of our area, with Fonte being too slow to react to RVP's run to the near post. NOT Fox's fault.
If you are going to blame individuals, for us conceding so many goals, you need to check your facts first, just as I have by looking at the highlights on Saints Player.

I just want Saints to do well and we are all supporters who want the same. I don't want Nigel Atkins to lose his job, I think he has earned the right to lead us and I honestly think we will do OK. But ultimately I support Saints, so if Nicola Cortese believes a change is needed I will still support, I may not be happy about it, but I will still support.
For people who say Nicola Cortese is not popular with people around St Mary's and within the football world, I really couldn't care less. We had enough of Rupert with his yearning to be popular within football circles. I want Nicola Cortese to continue doing what it is he is doing, I don't care if people like him or not. It is possible that some people don't like him because he demands, which is what all us fans want. We don't want him to enter popularity contests, I feel very at ease knowing our chairman is worried about the club, not his own popularity.
Whatever happens, we all stand together and support our team. I am so proud of what has been achieved and I want more, but I understand that it is not going to be easy going, supporting football teams never is.
One thing I can promise is that I will support the team who are on the pitch from the first to the last minute until my voice no longer works. I am sure we will all do the same, we can be the difference at St Mary's.
Yes, Nigel may make a wrong decision. Yes, one of our players may let a pass go astray or score an own goal.... But we will support. They are our team and we will give them all the support we need against Aston Villa. No moaning, just support. This will get our team through, like it did so many times in the past at the Dell. Our support can be the difference.
I want NA as manager
I want NC to do what he is doing and I don't care if people like him or not... as a fan I think he is superb and doing a great job, so who cares!
Most of all, I want Saints to be successful. This can only happen if we stick together and believe.
We are only four games in.... COME ON SAINTS... BELIEVE.

The positive from this game was the football played by the Saints in the second half. At times they kept possession well and had Arsenal chasing the ball. None of this was shown on Match of the Day but was shown on Sky Game of the Day. It will be interesting to see how Arsenal fair against opposition like Manchester City (Sunday), Manchester United & Chelsea. I think they will struggle.
JWP was outstanding on Saturday and showed seasoned professionals around him the type of commitment that is required at this level. On the premier league statistics as repored in the Sunday Mirror he covered the most ground of all the outfield players and had the quickest mph of all the outfield players. In addition he had a 94% completion of passes. Why is a 17 year old boy leading the way?
I'm confident that Saints will pick up now but to do so they must show 100% commitment and effort!!!!

southamptonwayne wrote:Martin is out on a season long loan not a short term loan where he can be recalled. Please name the 'freebie' keeper you have in mind?
Yoshida is going to need a little time to settle, but when he does he's going to be a really good signing for us.
There's several on the market, but Artur Boruc and Craig Gordon spring to mind.
Kelvin is having a torrid time at the moment, not covering his near post, and certainly should have stopped the free-kick on Saturday, and RVP's winner. Not sure this is the right time to blood the new keeper though.

Now then, there's a nice Red one and there's a nice White one,so we still had to wear the nice Yellow one at the Emirates.
Don't get me wrong, these new shirts are 'nice', but they were chosen for all the wrong reasons-OUR Saints should be in Stripes, and I am awaiting confirmation of an early return to our traditional colours-who knows, some good fortune may return with their reintroduction.
I don't blame people for going out and getting "the new shirt"-it's what you do,whatever-especial
ly if you're a superstitious type-but it just ain't Saintly.
Whoever took the crass decision to choose this all -over strip has made an impact but should admit the big mistake, 'Man' up like Mr Ferguson did, and make the change-this time for sensibility not just for changes sake!
This laughable decision has already been highlighted in the national media, where they question the visible lack of respect for tradition and loyalty that is endemic in the genuine fans mindset. Those Stripes are a Big part of what gets us to St Mary's and behind the magnificent Saints. A part of our impact has been -hopefully temporarily-lost along with those valuable points, and rather like the biblical story of hair being lost with strength, it's too late when tempting fate.
Oh, and despite all this, check with the resident bean counter, as I think the shirt sales could have been higher, along with the league position.
