Maya Yoshida moved to Southampton to grow as a player in the Premier League

Maya Yoshida in action for Saints at Arsenal Maya Yoshida in action for Saints at Arsenal

HE may have had a baptism of fire in his earlier-than-expected debut at Arsenal on Saturday, but any Saints fans who caught a Japan match at the London Olympics will have reason to believe that in signing Maya Yoshida the club have completed an astute piece of business .

As well as being the main man at the heart of defence for the full national side – who are well on the way to qualifying for the Brazil 2014 World Cup finals and have conceded just once in their four games in the final stage of qualifying – Yoshida was also selected as an over-age player and entrusted with the captain’s armband as Japan finished fourth at this summer’s Games.

Speaking after his country’s 1-0 victory over Iraq in Saitama last Tuesday, the 24- year-old was eager to get acquainted with his new teammates as quickly as possible.

“I’m really excited to play for Saints in the Premier League, but first I have to know what I should do and how the team are going to play,” he said.

“I’m already a little late to join the team so I need to communicate well with my teammates.”

Jos Hooiveld’s injury in the opening half-an-hour at the Emirates Stadium meant Yoshida was thrown straight in at the deep end, and there can’t be many tougher games to make your first appearance in.

Related links

In the longer-term, though, the former Nagoya Grampus player shouldn’t have too many problems with communication, as he speaks excellent English having spent two years in Holland with VVV Venlo.

He agreed that his time in the Eredivisie had helped on that front, although is a little concerned that the difference between the lowlands and south coast versions of the language may differ slightly.

“I think I’m too used to speaking Dutch English, so I’ll have to study native English again,” he said with a grin.

“The Premier League is one of my great targets and, of course, Tadanari Lee is playing [for Saints] as well and I think that will help me.”

Yoshida has sounded out his compatriot Lee, pictured left, who missed the end of last season and start of this due to a broken metatarsal but is now available for selection again, about anything and everything ahead of the move.

“Of course, I asked him many things: about housing, the teammates, the coach and the culture,” Yoshida said.

Southampton is a very nice place.

“In the south, not far from London and I think I can buy Japanese food. And nearby there’s a port, so there will be a nice view, I think.”

Japanese players moving to England are often wary of the local cuisine, but Yoshida is keen to embrace all aspects of his new surroundings and is confident that it may actually be an improvement on his diet for the last couple of years.

“I will try, and I hope English food is much better than Dutch food,” he said. “I think many people say that English food is not so good but [that’s true of] Dutch food as well.”

On top of his advice from Lee, Yoshida has also received words of encouragement from Japan’s star player Keisuke Honda.

The CSKA Moscow player’s career has followed a similar path to that of Saints’ new defender, and having left Nagoya for Venlo and then moved onto bigger things the bleached-blond midfielder is sure his countryman has what it takes to be a success in England.

“I think he has the confidence to play in the Premier League and I think he’ll play well,” he said during Japan’s recent training camp.

“The most important thing is that he should have confidence.

“He shouldn’t change anything, he should just believe in himself.”

There should be few concerns on that front, and Yoshida himself is well aware of what he needs to do to help Saints achieve longterm success back in the top flight.

“I think the Premier League is a much, much higher level than the Eredivisie, so I have to get used to the speed and physicality,” he said.

“That’s why I chose the Premier League and I think I will grow up more – for myself and for the World Cup in Brazil.”

As well as focusing on what he needs to do personally, the 6-foot-2-inch defender also made sure that he knew all about his new club before his arrival, watching clips of their games and swotting up on some recent history.

“I saw highlights [of the Manchester United match],” said Yoshida. “Of course they conceded two goals right at the end of the game but before that they played very well, I think.

“The Saints came from the second division but [previously] they stayed for a long time in the Premier League.

They had a financial problem and went down to the third division but two years later they came back to the Premier League – they have a lot of ambition.”

He is hopeful that he can now help the club complete its recovery and once again become a top flight mainstay.

“There are new owners and they have good ambitions, and I have also,” he declared.

I think it was because the club wanted to give the first proper interview on the Saints website whereas the Echo beat them to the punch by sourcing an interview given to a journalist in Japan. You can see why the club was annoyed but newspapers are in the business of breaking exclusives, so you can't really blame them for printing it.

Laurence Bassini is a Stanmore based English businessman.

Mr. Bassini, formerly Bazini, took over Watford Football Club in a £440,000 takeover, on 31 May 2011 when the club's previous parent company, Watford Leisure PLC was de-listed from the London Stock Exchange.

Bassini was made bankrupt in 2007 following the failure of a business, The Fox at Ibstone near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, which is now the Fox Country Inn. He was bankrupt for about a year and it was because of this bankruptcy, that he changed his name from Bazini to Bassini to "have a fresh start"

Bassini was due to meet the fans at the annual Fans Forum on 8 November 2011 but had to cancel due to illness. He had to also cancel a subsequent phone in on 22 November 2011 - again due to ill health.

In June 2012, Bassini sold Watford Football Club to Giampaolo Pozzo, owner of Udinese and Granada.

Strikes me they are made for each other. I was in the Chainrai camp but this has definately swayed me!

I have it on good authority that the 'feeding of the multitude' is in fact a myth.

Truth was Jesus was at New Fratton Park and fed all the bestest bestest ever anywhere bestest in the world ever fans (TM) with 5 loaves and 2 fish - infact there was quite a bit left over due to the Fewness of them.

Unfortunately, although usually known for their honesty, the bestest etc distorted the story over the generations in embarrassment of their poor numbers (even though they were greater back then having just bought the Gospel Cup).

There is a darker side to the story in circulation regarding events involving the fish but I shall save that for another time due to the deletion police!

Maya and Gaston did OK in second half on saturday, but let's not forget Arsenal took foot off the gas. Gaston looks a quality act, looked comfortable on the ball and I am sure will be a big hit. Both of them only got off a plane on Thursday so a little unfair for them to even be involved on saturday. My problem is where all the attacking/ flair players are going to fit into the team. A 6-1 defeat I guess gives the manager the ammunition needed to get rid of some of the old guard. Don't agree with those calling for Fox's head, I think to put Shaw in could ruin his development. Ward Prowse in midfield is one thing, but a 17 year old at left back would leave him horribly exposed. Our wide playes have not been hel0ping the fullbacks and this has been part of our problem.

I can't. I was at an atheist christening. It was unbelievable - we were all sitting around talking about how nice these things are once you take the whole 'god' part out of proceedings and the next thing I knew I was checking my phone and seeing we were five down.

I also had the most outrageous diarrhoea the next day,

It makes you wonder if there really is some spiteful old sh1t looking down on us, doesn't it?
Brilliant ;0)
Priceless!!!!!!!!!!! and the father son remark!!!!!

Dont forget God had diarrhoea himself back in 1898, hence Portsmouth FC was born !!

Udinese is mentioned in the thread above. Remind you of anything? Like a team who are already dumped out of the Champions League Qualifying and are in the relegation zone in their own league, but at least have enjoyed one thumping win this season. No, I thought not; selective amnesia just like Twadkins on TV on Saturday night claiming that you have "scored in every game" this season. (Wigan anybody?)

10,000? Given the various Biblical references on this thread, this begs the obvious question, what if those 10,000 skates got a bit hungry. How would the good Lord set about feeding the 10,000 skates? He could hardly do it with a bit of bread and a handful of fish, could he? It would be cannibalism and that's just plain wrong, like, say, dating your cousin from Eastney.

Pompey are going down again with no money in the bank. They will sink to League 2 without any problem.

The future is bright with the MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

After watching everton's work rate last night - I won't accept those that say we cannot compete with teams that have spent millions on players.

We have also spent millions - our 2 most expensive players add up to 20 million worth of spending.

We need to be ready for Villa.

The Saints Supportes DEMAND A WIN and will be behind the manager and Team.

wet spam are doing well with limited spending and although they have not played the Top Teams they have points in the bag.

TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS.

Of course I am, I'm waiting for the right timing for that one Folkestone.

If you are 'return of the seed' can you put that fit'n' proper question to them please a I am sure you will get an unbiased and warm response

As for the subject of the original article: "leregation crause? What does it mean about saraly after leregation?"

Actually Adkins was talking about the top three sides when he said scored against each of them. Listen more carefully next time.

Relegation clauses are a must. We may go down and if we didnt have them we'd end up in Administration and only crooks and scammers would be prepared to buy us and we'd end up liquidised.

Come on Swindon.
Lovely to know that you are obsessed with our fixture list. Do you have it pinned up above your bed so it is the first thing you see every morning? I couldn't care less about your fixture list, except to note that William Hill have opened a book on when your first League win will be (11/4 none of the next 4 games, if you want a good bet).
Im amazed that you and Pi55stain (pompey in spain) are on a Saints forum while your team is playing and fighting for their lives. I can certainly see where you got the reputation for bein the bestest ever bestest supporters of the bestest ever club ever(TM)

Like the comment earlier about Saints being Arsenals training kit. Remember when you were ? ...2009...only difference is you were at home HAHHAHA

Funny you should mention that. The new manager who came in to save them after they sacked the previous one was a chap by the name of Redknapp. Who by coincidence is red-hot favourite to be your next manager.

i long been of the impression that seed should be honored by the queen (no not in brighton!) for his work in extracting the urine from the fishy few!
with that subject matter i would expect an MBE (May Become Extinct).

The Daily Star says Saints are after Rafa Benitez to replace Nigel.

I sincerely hope not.

But I have felt the threat of foreign coach coming here since just before the Champions League Final. I think Nicola would prefer a European to an Englishman if he sees Saints as a top 6 team with a host of imported players.

Funny you should mention that seeing as my next post a minute later was 'preferably without Redknapp'. I see what you did there, copy us but change it slightly to worse effect and fail miserably. Typical Pompey.

I don't think any of us know what Nicola truly thinks on the subject of management. We will always be guessing on that one.

But I have faith that he has enough class about him to give the current boss and his newly created squad time to sort things out.

I truly beleive that any speculation is just a press puff. I do not think Adkins has anything to worry about unless we are bottom at Christmas. I also believe with equal passion that we will be at least seven places higher than where we are now by Christmas and at least eleven places higher by the end of the season.

It's all about belief, passion for the club, and perspective.

They're AMAZING. You hire a function room, give everyone loads of wine, gather people together for a quick reading and then ask a couple of people if they'll agree to watch out for the child in question and then everyone carries on drinking wine. It's essentially the same as a christening but without a priest bringing the mood down by banging on about 'sin' or pouring water all over the baby.

It must be hard being an athiest in Americky? Do they not have secular naming ceremonies there?
