RICHARD Gillespie – the man known as ‘Mr Goals’ at his old club Bashley – is vying for the same title at AFC Totton .

The prolific marksman added two more to his account on Tuesday night as the Stags saw off Bideford 2-0 at the Testwood Stadium in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

It took Gillespie’s burgeoning league and cup tally to 11 goals and stretched Totton ’s unbeaten run to five games.

Manager Steve Riley kept faith with the same starting line-up that forged Saturday’s excellent 3-1 win at St Neot’s.

It was even-stevens at the start with Totton’s Mike Gosney having a first- minute shot blocked and Jamie Whisken threatening with a header from Ryan Hill’s free kick.

Bideford pressured the Stags with a succession of corners around the 15- minute mark, but it was the home side who took the lead on 24 minutes when Dave Allen found Gillespie on the edge of the six-yard box and he angled his shot out of the keeper’s reach.

Gosney, Hill and Allen had further opportunities and, on the stroke of half- time Hill had a free-kick blocked and sent the follow-up over.

More Totton chances followed after the break with Gosney, Luke Whitley and Whisken all testing the keeper and the referee waving away a handball appeal following a cross by man-of-the-match James Coutts.

Gillespie – a summer signing from Eastleigh - struck again on 74 minutes, racing onto a Hill’s long ball, outpacing his marker and burying an angled shot from 15 yards to the delight of a 267 crowd.

The Stags almost had a third on 80 minutes, but Whisken’s scooped effort hit the bar, and then Allen fired over late on.

"We were very good," said Totton boss Steve Riley. "We created a lot of chances in the second half and could have scored more.

"The important thing was to win again on Tuesday after a good win at St Neots last Saturday.

"Sometimes when you get a great result on the road, you take your foot off the gas. That was the theme of Tuesday's team talk. There was no room for complacency."
