Southampton manager Nigel Adkins not worried about losing his job
9:10am Friday 21st September 2012 in Sport
By Simon Peach
NIGEL Adkins insists he has no need to look over his shoulder – despite reports suggesting his job could be in jeopardy.
Saints have lost their first four matches back in the Premier League, leading to speculation that chairman Nicola Cortese , pictured, could look to replace him.
Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez and former Saints and Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp have been mentioned as potential candidates to replace Adkins.
However Adkins, who helped the club to back-to-back promotions from League One , insists such talk does not affect him.
He believes he will be at St Mary’s for the foreseeable future.
“It doesn’t affect me,” he said.
“I don’t read the newspapers. I’ve got a great working relationship with the chairman here at Southampton and we share a common goal.
“We’ve had a great couple of seasons and there is stability here at Southampton, so we don’t even think about things like that.
“I have got my own desire to keep winning games of football because we have that winning mentality here at Southampton.
“There is a desire that we keep being strong and improving.
“I think if you’re looking over your shoulder thinking ‘Well, if I don’t win this one’ your mind is going to be affected in different ways so I don’t even think about that.
“At some stage in the future, like in every job, there will be a parting of ways a long way down the line.
“All we are doing (right now) is concentrating on what we’re doing.
“There is stability at Southampton, we’re bringing the youth players through the system.
“We have just played Man United and Arsenal and they would have had difficult spells, but they kept stability and that is why they have been successful.”
Adkins, whose side face Aston Villa tomorrow aiming to get their first points of the season, insists that the bond of trust with Cortese is so strong that he has not even spoken to him about the reports about his future.
“We don’t need to talk about it,” he said.
“We have a really good dialogue, contrary to what many people believe.
“We have an excellent working relationship and we share the same common goal; we want Southampton Football Club to do well.
“We know there needs to be stability, we know there needs to be support. We drive each other on. There is nothing wrong with that.”

.
SFC have had enough instability over the last few years ( prior to take over ) now its time to reverse that trend.
.
NA and NC have done a fantastic job so far and long may it contiue.
.
We have just played what will possibly the top three clubs in the PL ... who are possibly three of the best teams in Europe ...... and to be honest we didnt expect to get much from those games.
.
We have a number of new players who have hardly played or even trained together much with their late arrival or International duty.
.
Better times are round the corner and will start on Saturday.
.
ANY SFC supporter who calls for NA to be sacked should be ashamed

Why would you change after a handful of games.
Personally I think because the newspapers get so little info from NC they want to stir up rubbish. NC has sacked 1 manager in 2+ years and we all know why. NA on to europe.

Imo it would be a massive step backward if NA was sacked, I don't believe for a moment that NC would consider it at this early stage of the season, we have new players to bed in and we have just played 3 teams that will be fighting for 1st,2nd and 3rd place in the league!
See where we are after 10-12 games, things will start to even themselves out about by then.

No real Saint who shared the journey of the last two seasons would even consider dumping Nigel without at least a season long trial. We've bought new players who only now are meeting each other and beginning to train together. They need to adapt to a new club, new team mates, the Premier league and in some cases the UK. Only a fool thinks that happens over night.
The team that took the two Manchester's close was the team assembled in Div1 and the Chamionship. It can only get better.
For the rest of us speculating about Nigel's future, it's more about trying to unpick the mind of a cipher (NC) than it is about measuring Nigel's worth.
I'm on record with the opinion that Nigel will be sent packing if we don't start winning at villa or very soon after that. I don't want Nigel to go, I just think that Swiss businessmen (I know many) prefer to project the image of a fortress to the world, but swiftly terminate those who fall short of goals.
We should have no doubt that there are goals agreed between NC and NA, and NA will be moved if we are short of the milestones agreed.
I believe Nigel can be our own ferguson if he can complete the step up. He has the makings and pedigree of a loyal, high achiever. But I think he will need to secure a milestone soon, and that is x points from the first 30, or something like that.

liverpool, spurs, villa and west hoof are more likely to sack their managers imo. fat sams fat face has never fit in at hoof, liverpool have had easier games than us and only have 2 pts from them, and are not playing in a way the fans or players like, as have spurs who have 5pts but no support from the fans for AVB (they want twitchy back the fools!). lambert hasnt even had a honeymoon period at villa, and they have a history of changing managers.
when i look what adkins has done and achieved, and the way he runs the club, i dont think that at the moment we could get anyone better! Adkins will get the wins we want and need and we should be safe this season.

Why would anyone think he is not the same Manager at this level. The gap is clearly in some of the players ability to step up.
For those calling for 4-4-2 and not 4-3-3 the players need to adapt and mix it up a bit. Unfortunately we still seem to have the mentality he's a forward, he's a midfielder, and he's a defender. As far as I can see they all need to be doing a bit of everything!
We must carry no one this season - as soon as Puncheon loses interest he needs to be taken off. It's no good hoofing it to Lambert unless someone can support him!
Our full backs need support and cover - partnerships and understanding don't come overnight - but it would be nice to see players reading the game better - a bit like Bridgey and Marsden!

Come on be fair, think about it. We were in League 1 for what 7 yrs, correct me if I'm wrong which I know you will. Nicola got ring of Pardew and we met this man from up north, an ex goalie and physio, what did he have to offer us. Well he offered us hope, stability, honesty and most of all the chance to go up. Did we go us yes we did and what a way we did as well, sometimes maybe not the easiest way but then we are Southampton FC, then came the Championship and yes we went up again and not the eay way either but we did and why. We went us becuase we had a great team of players fantastic backroom staff, a great no not great a fantastic manager and Nicola a force in himselve and the belief of the real fans as St Mary's.
Ive only been going for a few seasons but I would not have it any otherway. Nigel is a GENTLEMAN sorry about the capitals but thats they way it has to be written he and Nicola are awesome and have such a fantastic way with each other and I know if Marcus was here he would agree as well. What were we told when Marcus bought the club a 5 year plan well we went up prematurely to the plan and we will stay there too. Lile Ian of Redhill said no one is after Readings manger and if any of you have been listening to Skysports, we had the bastism of fire and alot of clubs in the premiership might be in the same position as us if they had the draw we had.
We are Saints, we never do things the easy way and for god sake stop saying Nigel must go, the only people that should go are the bl**dy glory hunters who have bought season tickets because we are in the Premier League. I was at the 2 pre-season games and had people behind me talking about Saints, talk about whooray henry's how I didn't turn round and tell them to go elsewhere but thats another story.
To those who don't like whats happening go and watch another team, leave St Mary's alone and let us get on with it. Yes we need to see Tadanori sooner rather than latter an also Gazzerniger also need sto get some more games in as Kelvin will have to move over sooner rather than later.
Well guys and girls I've had my say, I will be a Saints supporter till the day I die.

Me also thinks that the mileage on this one is not far and the M27 comes too mind but then I might be wrong. Think about it we have played 4 games, as I said before alot of professional people on the TV etc have said we are doing well and what happened last week !!!!! Oh yes Fox scored the first goal against Arsenal, if we were no good he would not have got the goal. Yes 2 own goals Jos's think his injury might to be to blame and Nathan's that was total bad luck.
Lets all just see where we are when we play Arsenal on 1/1/13 then we can re-assess should Nigel be with us or not. Remember, it takes along time for a new manager to fit in and also earn the respect of the players, we have respect running at St Mary's and like they say don't fix it unless its broke and Saint's are not broke, in more ways than one. That reminds me where have all the kitchen liquidisers gone in Pompy!!!! heard there was a run on them recently.

Not one true Saints fan wants Adkins to go. Even if we got relegated (which we will not - I assure you) I'd still want him to remain our manager.
And not one true Saints fan would ever want Harry Rednapp back as our manager -ever-.

The "Headline is" Nigel and his job. Think about this carefully, we have played 4 games like everyone has said against the 3 top teams in this league. If we had played teams that are classed as being of lower position within the Premier League then yes we would have every right to be baying for Nigels Blood, but we didn't. We have to give everyone a chance, we have not spent stupidly yes maybe we should have concentrated on defence as well, but you can't have it all. We have 4 or is it 5 players that are playing for their country and thats within Great Britian, not bad going when you think how long it has taken us to get back into the Premiership.
Yes we all have a right to express our views and you have done this, the only problem is it doesn't sound like the views of a true Saint Supporter so yes you will be called offensive names, well not offensive as I see it but then we can all use vocabulary of a colourful nature. Think it best that it be left that way. Saints supporters due use sentiment in there display, thats what makes us one of the best travelling supporters in the country and why last week on TV and other line feed you could hear us singing.

This is the type of journalism which we can all do without. We get it in the Argus (no surprises there as the two are one and the same!) a groundless story designed to fill space and get (successfully!) a reaction. I cannot for one minute, see a well run club like Saints sacking one of the best young managers around at present on the back of a handful of early results against some of the best teams in the country. The Premier league is a massive step up from the Championship with a steep learning curve to deal with. I fully expect results to improve for you and if Saints finish above 6th bottom in the first season back in the big time then you have had a great season! Good luck to Saints and Adkins and can the Echo stop writing such drivel! Lets hope we all meet again next year.............in the Premiership that is!

The lucky few get to the winners table (THE PREM), each with a different size starting pile of chips.
Trust me, it’s not about the chip count now, it’s about the chip count at the end of the tournament and that changes constantly.
Regardless of win, lose, draw scenarios for Saturday, the end game (SEASON END POSITION) is the main real point of reference.
So many chips/points still to play for. Stay composed, keep your belief, and keep your class .... And try and sneak a look at your opponents hand while they are not looking (talking from experience).

Our manager requires our support.
Why are we already sugggesting that he will get the sack after only 4 games?
It,s too early to judge whether he can or can't do it at this level.
We have to accept that he is a novice in this league, our team are novices but are all having to learn fast.
Agreed, he has made some mistakes, and they have cost us points.
Ferguson did that in his first season at Man U.
There was a call for his head.
What a mistake that would have been!
I love to watch my team,I want them to be sucessfull, as any other football fan would.
We have to be patient.
Not easy after our last few seasons of great achievement, I know.
Please get off his back and get behind him on Saturday,he will get it right so cut him some slack.

Adkins has made poor decisions recently and has cost us points, there is no loyalty in football, if one day liverpool come calling im sure he'd be gone.
Felt abit sick watching Buttner go on a wonder run to score aswell knowing Fox is costing us points on a weekly basis with his shocking defending and constant long balls.

Huff as loadly as you like, the 2 previous promotions wont keep us in the premier league and its as simple as that.
Pulling out due to the sudden demands of a 'third party' was down to the chairman not the manager.
Nigel is stuck with the choice of Fox and Shaw and has obviously decided thus far that Shaw isn't ready yet.

We have new signings who have hardly be here five mintues yet it easy to see what quality siginings they are. NA will have Southampton F.C. up the league soon and people who know nothing about football and Saints can have their moment dining on our current league position, but will soon be choking on it! NA is the best young manager there is now, and the only parting of the ways later will possibly be when England call.
There are three saints-related echo sites posted this morning. This one, one about Adkins views on the coming match, and one about who villa might start with up front.
Oh, and one about callum mcnish falling further into obscurity.
Which one has all the comments, do you think?
News is information or analysis that is in the pubic interest, AND of interest to the public.
It is also a non story as NA himself on TV has cleared this rumour up!
But if you wish to believe it, it is up to you. But NA is the best up and coming manager, and after what the man achived this can not be questioned, and therefore it would also be foolish to sack someone with his record, even shortsighted!!
Watch Southampton move up this league!

All rubbish paper talk. NA got us 2 promotions. He is the most successful saints manager since Lawrie Mac. Why would you change after a handful of games. Going no where at scunny, lands a plumb job with a team under achieving and ends up in the premier league. He has gained himself a good reputation and wouldn't have a problem getting another post, where he gets to pick his own team!
If adders is sacked I hope there are questions asked of 'the don.
Adkins hasn't been given a fair crack IMO and has been restricted in the transfer market both in latest and last January. Puncheon was only made available at cortese's say so.
We needed defenders and every one new it, plus an experienced keeper not an up and coming one. We have been on the ascendancy for the past 2 seasons and IMO that has papered over a lot of cracks which will become present over the next few months.

He is 100% spot on in his focus & despite one blip we have performed above the level of last season.
Stability is key to us, getting a clear first team squad with everyone knowing their role at the club will not take too much longer.Grumbling among the fans is most likely due to the Premiership prices of tickets.

Atkins is a great manager, I hope he is here for years like Laurie and Ted.
Good luck for tomorrow, Saints crowd are behind you Nigel for the long term regards of results.
I think the problem with Nigel Adkins has to be that somehow he cannot for whatever reason get the defence sorted. Even through most of last season and even when we were in League one we were saying this same thing. So perhaps the problem lies with the way he plays the team. He wants this fast flowing attacking football this is part of his plan for our club and this has paid fantastic dividends to the club so far. We at times played some brilliant football last year, think of the way we swept Leeds away on the first game and did this in many other games. But to achieve that at this level is an incredibly difficult thing to do.We have already seen the makings of a great side in the games so far. If we manage to bring to fruition a side that can dominate games with fast flowing attacking football at this level (which is Nigel Adkins way of playing and what we surely all want to see) then we would be up there as one of the best teams in the premier When we move forward we are as good as anyone in this league. I can really see what he is trying to achieve. He needs time to build this team but unfortunately we have very little time.
If we truly want to be a great side in the premier league then we have to ride this storm and hopefully survive this season with Nigel Adkins in charge and with the addition of a defensive coach. Vital from now on is having the ability to close games out. We will nearly always score with this team so being able to a close game out will bring us the wins that we so badly need.
Another thing is we need to believe in the vision that the club has and Nigel Adkins has been a big part of that. It will be easy to think that an change of manager will change everything, I somehow doubt that.
Most of the really successful clubs at this level have long serving managers.
A big part of our problems over recent years is having one or two different managers per season. Lets not go back to those days.
There is a big difference to what we see now as to what was happening four or five seasons ago. The team is playing with great spirit even though at the moment we are losing I am sure better times are just around the corner. Ramirez is apparently already looking a class act and our young players are also looking good. there are many players in the wings who haven't had their chance yet who are chomping at the bit to get out there and have a decent run in the team.
Hopefully we have enough time and patience to put all this together.

It is noticeable that most other clubs do this, why not ours.

I reserve the right to change my mind if we are pointless in a month from now.
I notice that pompy fans grow restless on The News site. Apparently the didn't like the "you sing like a pub team" comment, he he he.
Surely a chant for the future?
Coyr.

1. Nigel Adkins is the best to happen to Saints for a very long and should be given a rousing shout tomorrow.
2. Kylie's @rse was mentioned, I think we should go for Jessica Ennis @rse as she is much fitter, is adaptable and would see the 90 minutes through with no problems.
3. The mention of that League One Pub Team being called 'The VAT And Fiddle' gave me a laugh

Interesting eh?! What a statement that would be!!
On the other hand, I firmly believe we currently have the best up and coming English manager in Adkins and hope he's able to at least see out his contract.
3-1 Saints today! COYR!

Saints relegated this season. Championship is much more exciting anyway

Looking at the squads in the Prem and our recent spending, I think he would be expected to keep us up this season.... I think we will stay up and I am still predicting a finish of 14th.
Not one true Saints fan wants Adkins to go. Even if we got relegated (which we will not - I assure you) I'd still want him to remain our manager.
And not one true Saints fan would ever want Harry Rednapp back as our manager -ever-.
It's really as simple as this.
Adkins is our King.
Long live the king.
I actually totally agree with you. I actually was thinking we'd finish around 14th/15th. I'm a bit more optimistic now though.
The only point I was trying to make was that I think showing Faith in Adkins will pay major dividends in the future. I certainly don't believe we'll go down this season though.
I just think progress will be a slower process in the premier league, and we just have to be patient. As we are being I guess.
Adkins is doing such a good job, and still has so much potential. Aston Villa match was the turning point, it's all down hill from here.

I'm all for sticking with Nigel, however, should he get the boot, Jose Mourinho has just had a very interesting interview saying his next move is definitely to England and he wouldn't rule out any clubs saying he could go anywhere.

Firstly it is because of the like's of the daily stirr that I have not brought a paper since 1994.
Secondly even if we were relegated NA would still have another season to get us promoted to be within the 5 year plan and I for one enjoyed last season being able to get tickets and winning most games

I was at the Arsenal game and didn't see it as a humiliation. I will also go to Everton and all the others.
At this moment in the season Arsenal were way better than us. We have to improve and we will. NA knows what he is doing. I still believe we will get to the top half of the table.
Nothing humiliating being in the Premiership after only 2 years ago being in League 1

Rant over, 3 points tomorrow! COYR!!!!!
Fox scored on the same day as Buttner-but then you're implying that we should always outbid ManU aren't you?

I think it will be a different story tomorrow,Yoshida is a fantastic defender if he can run the back line,Ramirez rampant in midfield plus Mayuka must play,he is lightning quick and would thrive on balls from Gaston.
