Saints sign Boruc

Artur Boruc Artur Boruc

Saints have signed Polish international keeper Artur Boruc.

The 32-year-old joins as a free agent until the end of the season.

Boruc could quickly find himself as the club's number one.

Kelvin Davis was dropped for the win over Aston Villa with 20-year-old Paulo Gazzaniga his replacement.

Third choice keeper Cody Cropper has picked up an injury which has meant Saints have had to stregnthen.

Boruc, who has 46 caps for his country, started his career in Poland before five successful years at Celtic.

After leaving Scotland he joined Fiorentina in Italy.

Glad to see genuine competition for the number one shirt. Feel a bit for Kelv, does this mean he's down to third in the pecking order?

What little I saw of Boruc when he was at Celtic, he seemed to be a pretty decent keeper, but capable of the occasional howler.

How did Gazzanigga look today?

I feel for Kelvin, he really stood by us, hope he stays with the club, Leeds away result last year was entirely down to him, that was the game when we knew we were going up.

Looked fairly assured, spent a lot of time in the warm up practicing the long kick out to Lambos head. At the end he resorted to some Argentinian type time wasting, if the game had been tighter would have picked up a yellow for sure!

A very good result for us today, maybe it will shut up those fools saying Nigel has to go. There was 30,000 supporters showing just what it means to have Nigel as our manager in the stadium today. The boys showed that they can be a force in this league. Anyone thinking they wll pick up three easy points at ST MARY'S better think again.

Gaston, puncheon, adam, Davis, Yosida ,Lambert are just a few that made it a great day to be a SAINTS FAN. I wonder what rock the skunts have crawled back under, we don't often get this much time to ourselves on this forum. Out of the bottom three and i feel this is where we will start to climb higher up the table. t seemed

We have now signed an international goalkeeper which should give us more solidarity in defence. Where are all the skunts that are on here most days telling us were going down??

Just watching Football First... Gazzaniga looked quite decent in between the sticks, needs more experience though! Quite impressed at the signing of Boruc, proven on the international stage... Consistent at club level. Think he could be our number 1 now, but like a lot of people have said I do feel a sorry for Davis... Fantastic servant to the club! Best 'keeper since Niemi I'd say!! Gaston looked very impressive today as well! COYR!! The futures bright, the future is red & white!!!

The crowds acknowledgement of Nigel, his instant response complimented by an immediate penalty was a fitting end to a great game.

The fact that Walter K and SaintsLegend (what a misuse of a login) don't even comment when we win sums them up. As soon as we lose again they'll be back.

Where's Thomas Upton when you need him too??!!!??!!!!

Come on Tom, try saying something postive. I know it sticks in your throat & we are not worthy because you are a Season Ticket holder, but just try it for once.

You never know, you might actually enjoy it. Hold on though, sorry Tom - I forgot, you don't like being told when to "stand up & clap" do you?

That doesn't make a great deal of sense, but I think you are insinuating that it was the dropping KD that ensured us a win, nothing to do with the new blokes then? Gazza wasn't exactly stretched, one very good save from Bent, better distribution perhaps, but surely not the only reason that we got a result I am thinking.

Left back, well Clyne was amazing when Frazer came on for Fox, ok maybe we should play Clyne on the left but we have cover.
Yesterday was amazing and only goes to show the idiots talking about Nigels head being on the block, me thinks they had there own heads up the *rses but who am I to say anything other than a true saint supporter.
What is it Nigel always says ????? Oh yes we are one and we are, not heard of fans singing to their mananager the way we do at St Mary's but there again we always do things different.
Paulo I thaught was awesome, yes I feel for Kelvin but NA made a good move on the goal front. Time wasting don't thinks so or maybe yes but he did have to do his laces up and to me thats not time wasting like alot of goalies taking time to pick up the ball at theend of the game to run down the time.

I understand the steward being concerned about health and safety. But hurling abuse at a saints player is a NOT COOL.

I trut he's being taken behind the bikeshed for a sound arse-whooping today.

I was enjoying Clyne's celebration to cap a mind-blowing performance as a left-back (the shaman gets a few months' reprieve perhaps?) when the stewards comments screamed out in the slow mo on motd.

Very bad for the club. He needs to be set straight. What a pr*ck.

Puncheon just wanted to play in the Prem, he's got his wish and enjoying himself. I remember Pardew saying that he could become a cult hero when signing him, he could be right but there are 4 or 5 other contenders now as well!
I think that Jose had a better game because of Maya, the guy just inspired confidence to others around with his cool head.
Fox will get a chance at redemption, Nigel doesn't discard without a very good reason and he has kept faith by and large.
Who are we going to play in the front 6? Who could you drop from yesterday to give a game to Jayrod, Tad, JWP, Chappers etc and the list is quite a few more.
Is Nathaniel the best young right back playing at left back, playing in his other best position? Could he do centre back too?
On tuesday we will see the lads who didn't get a game today and it will still be a string team as they will all be hoping to impress Nigel to get in the main team.
And three good goalies and a young one for the future.

It was great 2nd half. Full credit to Nigel for firstly dropping Davis and the taking Fox off and putting Clyne at left back! Totally changed the game!!

I wish we would sing before we're winning though. What's happened to the Northam?? So quiet all game! Also "only one Nigel Adkins" was sung way too late. Try singing that sooner next time!!!!

I doubt Nigel gives these threads a second thought. Furthermore, that he didn't sign everyone you, me or anyone else wanted in the summer doesn't mean he wasn't trying. Signing the RIGHT players isn't the easy task you make it out to be.

The truth is, he's doing a perfectly good job without your or my priceless advice.

Can we all now agree, Nigel's the right man to take us forward, the Don knows that, the players know that and we, the fans, know that, so the negative London press can pee off back to Wapping and let Nigel get on with turning the best team in Hampshire into the best team in Europe.

dadofmy3sons says...
12:10pm Sun 23 Sep 12

Artur is a real character and will not be dominated by other individuals.
We now have real competition for the goalies jersey with 3 who think they could and should be number 1.
The goalkeeping union is a weird arrangement with players all competing for the same jersey and knowing only one will get it, and yet they always support each other!
Nigel being an ex keeper will know of this and work it to our advantage.
Why do posters think we still need another CB?
Maya is the answer to both sides as he is two footed, so can replace Jos + Jo although I think it will be a case of those two fighting to partner him rather than the other way around.
Left back is not a problem area either, young Shaw will eventually be ready and I think Tuesday he will get a game and start to make his mark.

Good to think that we are discussing back room staff cos little elso to pick up on as NC & NA make progress.
My point with a top assistant for NA is someone with top tactical knowledge to help/advise him.
I just think that until he has gained a couple of years experience at this level he could do with extra tactical support as he has made the wrong call at times this season.
Couple of Examples:- v Wigan - changed shape leaving hole behind strikers so Martinez filled the space so, result was would couldn't get possession then didn't change it back. Also, v Man Utd - You don't take off three of your best performing players when you are only 2-1 up especially with players of less ability and put no-one on Paul Scholes so, result was loosing the game.
However the train is getting back on track and picking up steam again ! Come on you Red and White Pin-Stripes !!

Agree with your comments on MAN UTD game but , every manager in the prem started as our Nigel has, with little or no experience. He will make mistakes it's all part of the learning curve.
What Prem manager worth his salt would be prepared to come in and hold Nigel's hand as his junior while he learns?. As much as i respect your views i feel it would be best to go with what we have already.

Tebourba.
A smug g1t if ever I saw one.
Yes we all knew what was required, Saints did bid for the next big goalie, remember? I think you said he was overpriced. Well that was the asking price and no one bought him, he is still at Brum(0-5).We watched Gazza since Jan when the first contact was made with Gillingham, reported on several sites and copied and pasted by me and one or two others.
Amongst other suggestions was 3 centre backs, we bought the Japanese captain.
We needed two full backs, got the current U21 right back and MUFC outbid us on the left back! Although we currently have the Scotland Left back doing his best.
We also have in our development squad a full back that Arsenal covet and a centre back who is playing very well thank you.
The whole idea of a development squad is that you develop your own players and integrate to the first team.
Any more comments from yourself about how blindingly brilliant you are compared to us mere mortals will be gratefully torn to shreds.

What a time to be a Saints fan.
Yes, yes it is.

Mark my words! --- Saints will sign two defenders either out of contract very soon, or unfortunately they may have to until the next transfer window --- but sign them they will!!
NC has now woken up to the fact (sadly it took him 4 straight losses!) that Saints defence is not good enough for the Premier League.
Other posters please tell me that if NC is so over the moon with the form of KD -- why did he play an untried 20 year old in his place against Villa?
Maybe he has at last woken up to the fact that KD is over the hill.
I haven't got a down on NC I'm sure he's doing his very best!

Your ego is bigger than the known universe.

Given that NA/NC have signed three (count 'em) keepers since May, I don't think that there was any doubt in their minds that having one first string GK was not OK.

I love the fact that if they sign any defenders now in the January window, you are able to claim credit , as you've "predicted" it here. Well done! If they don't (unlikely) you can continue with your tedious negativity about how they should have done so.

Do you ever wonder whether NC and NA might tried to sign more defenders in the last window but couldn't get them in? Or are you really so self-centred as to believe they were waiting on your advice?

I suspect that you genuinely believe you've had a part in this. What an ego!

The two defenders we buy, would you like to tell us which current two you are going to discard?
Where do you propose we buy them from?
And what model are you supposing we follow, the Liverpool one? They have 6 international defenders and have had 10 goals scored against them.
I am glad that Nigel has "supporters" like yourself to wake him up, because I am certain that he is not spending nearly enough time at our games watching his team, or the training ground , to know what exactly he needs in the way of improvements.
If the club advertises for a scout to find us these mysterious replacements that only you know of, will you apply for the job?
KD was given a chance, that is what a manager of men does, rectify if needed. If you want loyalty then you have to give it too!
As for untried goalie, I think you will find that Petr Cech was once untried, come to that everybody was once untried and the only way to get experience is to play.
Bit of a conundrum that isn't it ?
Four straight losses, to the top three teams and a bad day.
Liverpool same goal difference and the money they spent?
Rodgers also needs your help because he hasn't noticed that he hasn't got any strikers.
Hindsight? brilliant ! wish I had known we would concede one goal first half and score four in the second half, I would have had a proper bet instead of my lousy 3 - 1 ruined in the last minute by that b4astrd Ricky.

Only danger is the way he and Gaston, his neighbour from the other side of the River Plate, seem to be chummy together, if they succeed with us we may have to give them the Falklands-Malvinas back!

There's a handful of c0cks on here that think 4 defeats, 3 against top sides, had undone 2 seasons of magic by NA. One even thinks he runs the team! Paulo Gazzaniga I thought looked very confident, positioned himself well and I'm afraid you missed the point that thanks to his tying his laces and fiddling with his gloves just when the four minutes of added time had about expired, the ref added a bit more time during which we won the penalty to make it 4!
Only danger is the way he and Gaston, his neighbour from the other side of the River Plate, seem to be chummy together, if they succeed with us we may have to give them the Falklands-Malvinas back!

By the way, Osprey Saint, why is it you support us and not the Swans? (perhaps you do, but Osprey rugby!)
It's a long and probably boring story so I won't bother you with it, but believe me I am Saints through and through, there is no other team. Born and bred in Bassett and still living there 65 years on.

PS Are we on for Goodison?
Never!

Yes hope so. Need to touch base with Paul check its ok to stay once I've put Seed the Small to bed. Never seen us win in three trips to Goodison 2-0 6-1 7-1. First was a cup game about 1981. Fourth time lucky!

Osprey you must know a goalies role in defence ?
he organises his defenders he catches the ball not thumping it straight to the opposite side.
I stated we needed to change our defence & I suggested replacing the Keeper.
he has put in his new players & replaced the Keeper but for the sloppy Villa goal what I've said has been vindicated.
From what I've seen up to this weekend you would still have a weakness in defence if you hadn't changed Keepers.
didn't we get one of our defenders from Celtic?

I have come to terms with the fact that I am not top flight management material...and will never be a major investor/owner of SFC. All I can provide is 1/32000th of world class support for my club at a game each week.

just a quick note to our very own russell grant (yes you Tebourba) NC does not pick the team! Nigel Adkins is the manager! seems strange you cant tell them apart! and could you please quantify your statements that KD "is over the hill" you have said this before and i`ve told you there are other keepers in the prem older than him who are doing a great job! over the hill would mean you think hes to old! Boruc is only 3 years younger. if you think KD is not good enough then say so!
the reason you get so much abuse from so many on here is that you come across as a sanct1monious g1t!
perhaps if you tried being positive for a change instead of picking faults with the team or formations or the management, and then telling us all how great you are for being the only one who sees it, perhaps then people might not call you names and have a go at you! you may realize that one day but then hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Tom : Nigel made perfectly rational decisions that didn't come off. Any other time they would have been hailed genius.. Scholes changed the game for Manure. The boo brigade are too quick to slag and some just don't want to wait and see. Most of the positive regulars here said wait and see where we are after ten games.

That was only the first game we've had after a week together at the training ground.. Gaston Ramirez was bought to bring class to the team that the young players can learn and feed off. That is the kind of fore-thought the new era has at SFC.

Just look for positives in things and hold off on the negatives and you'll love Saints all the more.. Fact is Saints are not the easiest team in the world to stay pos about so those that can are very strong fans indeed.

UTS friends neg and pos together.. we are Southampton

The "sloppy" Villa goal was a result of a complete mis-kick by Stephen Ireland, which threw the defence and fell nicely for Bent who being the consumate professional that he is gratefully accepted the gift and buried it. My point was that it wasn't just the GK change that turned the game, that was just one piece of the jig-saw. The opposition won't know any Gazza weaknesses as they have never seen him before, other Teams will soon find out as he plays more games.

Anyone asking for NA's head must be mad, he is the best coach Saint's have had since Ted Bates and LMcM.
In fact, the modest, professional way in which he conducts himself, is in my humble opinion, better than TB and LMcM's.
NA is a credit to Saints and to his profession, just compare him with the likes of Redknapp and Big Sam!
The day he leaves Saints, hopefully not until he retires from the game, will be a very sad day for the club.
He accepted the applause and suppport of the fans on Saturday (I was happy to join in) with typical good grace.
All to often Clubs sack their managers when the problem lies elsewhere in the management structure, classic examples are Lowe of Sothampton, Bates of Chelsea and the fool at Leeds who got rid of Cloughie after 41 days!

In my mind this is a good piece of business. It will increase competition between the sticks. The guys experience playing top flight football for celtic and in italy, plus his wealth of experience at international level, will stand the club in good stead.Hopefully it will help Saints maintain their already high level of support in Poland and will get our polish friends in southampton through the turnstiles too.Bart Bilakowski served the club well between the posts and lets hope his compatriot will do even better for the SAINTS.

Sensible signing, gives us the ability to rotate between the sticks - welcome aboard Artur!

Hopefully Super Kelv will stay with us for a while yet, maybe taking up a coaching role later on down the line.

Well done everyone (except for that c0ck of a steward who swore at Clyne, shame on you!) - you made this former season ticket holder living in Edinburgh a very happy bunny. And with SRL, Adamski and Clyne in my dream team, I prodded buttock this week :-)

I'm gobsmacked, is this for real? Apart from some minor spelling errors, an excellent post, credit where it is due!

I bet you were slagging the team off to all & sundry at half-time & then disappeared into your shell during the 2nd half. After all, you would hate to eat humble pie a lot more than enjoy something!

In NA & NC we trust - COYR!!!
Read my posts Rob I haven't slagged off the team. Adkins made some poor decisions against Man U and Arsenal. Something positive the beer I had before the game went down a treat.
you don't praise them either ........ go on , it doesn't hurt .
what was it corporal jones used to say

they don,t like it upton!!!

Fair points, good debate and welcome your comments. I don't agree but that's what these forums are for.

Your only positive from this weekend is good beer?

Yes I have to admit it was a good beer. Gaston played a full game as he should of done against the gunners, I stand by what I said. Baddesley don't make personal replies, you've been reported!
