Artur Boruc set to start for Southampton against Sheffield Wednesday
8:00am Tuesday 25th September 2012 in Sport
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Artur Boruc
Artur Boruc could be in line for a quick-fire Saints debut tonight.
The 32-year-old Polish keeper only joined the club after watching Saints beat Aston Villa on Saturday but could figure as his new club takes on former boss Dave Jones’ Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the Capital One Cup at St Mary’s this evening.
It is understood that Nigel Adkins would like to blood Boruc as soon as possible with the experienced international having not played since May.
But he will only do so if he thinks that Boruc is entirely ready to get a taste of the action so quickly.
If Boruc can play and comes through successfully he will be in contention to start against Everton.
The ex-Celtic and Fiorentina man has been brought in to bolster a goalkeeping department that includes Kelvin Davis , who was dropped for the Villa match, and Paulo Gazzaniga who was drafted in for a first Saints start.
Adkins is expected to make a full 11 changes for the game against Wednesday tonight, who are also expected to change their side around from their regular league line-up.
There could be youngsters given a run out, such as Luke Shaw, who is looking to impress as a good performance could gain him a left back slot in the Premier League .
Also some of the players who helped take Saints into the Premier League such as Richard Chaplow and Danny Butterfield could be given a game, along with the likes of Dan Seaborne .
Emmanuel Mayuka is hoping for a first start since his £3.5m summer move.

This is a chance to get through the last 16 of the competiton - when do you start to take it seriously?
The draw has been kind - a home tie against a club last year in League 1, who have struggled to adapt to The Championship. Surely it's a gimme?
The second string (although many not so second string) will be good enough tonight.
I remember when Wednesday used to have the woo-doo over us - but will we have the last hoot tonight? Bring on The Owls!

It's good to have this depth and its also good to know they will be taking it seriously to justify a first team place.
I hope we actually do well in this competition. I know the premiership takes priority but cup runs are exciting and fun for the fans.

What did people think of the new young keeper on Saturday? He did not have to make many saves, though I thought he should have stopped Bent's goal. But his positioning looked naturally better than KD's, especially at the near post.

Aston Villa had won one game at home and drawn one away.
Everton next Saturday will be a different proposition entirely and we should do nothing tonight that will weaken our chances of bringng home at least a point from Goodison.
The League Cup or whatever its new name is, is a second class competition, which apart from the final and semi finals will be contested between clubs' reserves -- it should be re-named the Football Combination Cup which in the old days was a competition specifically for the stiffs.
For those not as knowledgeable or experienced as me, who will no doubt scream I'm talking nonsense,I say, just look up all the attendances and the team members in tomorrow's papers.
I would advise NA to play the reserves and tell them to treat the game as a friendly, we need a run in this Competition like a hole in the head! ---- NC will have to foresake the few bob a run in this competition would give him, the return is less than insignificant compared to Premiership survival.

I met a Wednesday supporter on holiday the day after they had beaten Fulham.
He said, "We've got a great left side mid fielder. Jermaine Johnson. Trouble is he's always injured. Pulled muscles, hamstrings, the lot! We call him the tampon kid, in for one week out for three."
His wife suddenly appeared out of a shop. Face like a bag of nails.
"Come on Bill!"
"I'll leave you with that one." he said and grinned.

Football’s fashionistas are falling over themselves to acknowledge Southampton striker Rickie Lambert as the Premier League’s latest working-class hero. Grant Holt, Norwich’s status symbol, is so last year, dahling.
It’s all nonsense, of course, but the fuss is a sign that he, and Southampton, have arrived. The only surprise about Lambert’s emergence as an authentic top-class striker is that anyone is, well, surprised.
He is big enough to wear the number seven shirt at Southampton which, like the seven at Liverpool, nine at Newcastle, and 10 in most clubs, has a certain weight about it. It once belonged to Matt Le Tissier, who also dared to be different.
Scouts from all of the big clubs have nibbled at Lambert like fish attacking a piece of bread. But none saw beyond his immediate potential as a combative, physically imposing centre-forward. They were put off by his age, 30, and consequent lack of resale value.
That’s puzzling, given that he has scored 92 goals in the three years since his £1m move from Bristol Rovers. He has converted 26 penalties out of 26, and has his eye on Le Tissier’s club record of 47 out of 48.
He drops deep to link up play and has a good range of passes. He compensates for his lack of pace with spatial awareness and a quick football brain. He is not the big lump up front that some would have you believe his knack of pulling off his marker to find space at the far post has already embarrassed some celebrated defenders.
One of the subplots of Southampton’s season will be the development of his professional relationship with Gastón Ramírez, whose vision and technical ability will create chances for him even in the forbidding environment of the Premier League.
Lambert’s back story challenges the prejudices of what is, despite its global dimensions and superficial glamour, an innately conservative sport. He was unemployed for four months after being released by Blackpool and resurrected his career at Macclesfield, Stockport and Rochdale.
He’s no overnight hero, but he’ll be around for a while.

Then found out that the registration of members was not operational and it was only open for members already registered.
Called the ticket office and eventually got through after about ten minutes of redialling only to be told to call the other number for away tickets.
Called the other number and eventually gt through to an answer machine that told me to call back when it wasn't so busy.
Called again by hitting redial for about another ten minutes and finally got through to a human being.
I was told that they couldn't do anything about the registration issue as it was not operational and that the best bet for tickets would be to go to the ticket office.
Drove from Netley to the ticket office and queued for about ten minutes and finally got to the ticket office.
Told the lady I wanted 4 tickets for West Ham away and handed over the 4 customer numbers she asked for.
She then told me she'd checked the data base and could not give me any tickets because I hadn't already purchased 2 away match tickets.
I told her I was told to come over by people on the phone and this was not mentioned to me. I also told her about the fiasco I'd had since 9am trying to buy on line and get proper info via the two phone lines.
I also told her that because of work commitments I couldn't get to Man City but did go through similar hassle and tying to get an Arsenal away ticket to no avail because I hadn't gone to Man City away???
I asked her how can anyone (who has been a multiple season ticket holder for the past 3 years and has travelled the length and breadth of the country following Saints in League 1 and the Championship) ever get another away ticket for the Premier League campaign now they have missed the very first game of the season.
Her answer......wait until they go on general sale and IF there's any left you might be lucky.
What a total f@ck up.
The information given out is p1ss poor and the ticket allocations seem lower for away games in the premier league than they did in League 1 and the Championship which is also p1ss poor.
The Woolston Connection are becoming rather annoyed with the new allocation system and are slowly becoming and feeling disconnected from Saints.
Anyone else struggling out there or can anyone get hold of four West Ham tickets either through the sh1t Saints system or through another outlet????

The masses finally wake up to the talents of Rickie Lambert

Hello, my good Saints freinds. It was so good to see you have your first win against Villa. I did not like to visit you whilst you were having a torrid opening spell just in case it appeared that I was having a gloat. Your opening fixtures dealt to you surely could never had been worse. You should have no trouble tonight against Wednesday as here at Brighton they were totally outplayed 3 nil. Now that's a familiar score line between our two great clubs. We are having a wonderful season so far (thank you for Dean Hammonds' return). I hope it doesn't fall away for us like it did last season. Somehow I think not. Good luck to you for the rest of the season, I'm sure you will survive with very little trouble.
I hope you're right about Wednesday, we'll see.
How's Dean getting on? Hope he received a good welcome.
Good luck for the season.

The fun of away days in the Championship and League 1 are over unless you have a season ticket and go to every away match. There are too many people chasing too few tickets.

I intended to get Arsenal tickets but the 3,000 tickets went before I could say, 'Good loggy, miss moggy'.
Does anyone know why the club didn't ask for a second 3,000? I thought we were entitled to 10% for away Prem matches.
Would love to be over this w/e (if I could get tickets). Never been to Goodison. Alas, for us away fans, visits home this season could be a nightmare.
As for this evening, It won't be straight forward, the Owls have been investing. I wonder how Michael Antonio (if played) will get on. Sure Dave Jones will get a good reception.
So the most we are ever entitled to is 3000.

I've mastered this online booking system and it let's you link to 'friends' so I will link to Slugger, Bill, Puppy, J7 and other season ticket holders. I will be going to several northern games so if Mack, Strassie etc want tickets I can buy tickets and meet them there and the others get credited with going to an away game to boot.
And if we make Wembley I will be able to buy loads of tickets and sell them for a fortune!
Everyones a winner! (Well unless we make Wembley of course when I shall be a large winner amongst a number of losers.)

Why don't they do a 'season ticket' for away games? I'd buy one and sell on/give away the one's I couldn't do.
Guess we'll have to get in line behind you plebs as well then.
I'd be careful of accepting sweets from strangers though!
I don't see why an all singing all dancing computer system can't take into account previous seasons away attendance, particularly this early in the new season.
You've got him wrong by the way. He gave me sweets and offered to take me back after the match to see his pet skunts but I couldn't make it this week. Nice chap. It's all new to me out there!
One clue, in trying to remove the stigma of football holliganism the over reaction is so great they throw out the baby with the bath water...
Many fans tried to get tickets for certain games and are clearly from here,,, computer say's no...however some jobsworth moron wrote the programme under instructions from the club..
We had a drink at the Ars before half time, I know, I know, we are allowed flags at away games however SFC despite it's relativelynew fantastic management team side team side is still treating fans as potential troublemakers and nee'r do well's.

Should have said that Folketone to St Marys is 152 miles each way so we cannot go to the ticket office to buy them.

There are too many people chasing too few tickets.Depends on the fixture. The London games will all be sell-outs but it's amazing how many fans won't travel past the midlands. There were absolutely loads of empty seats at the Etihad and I'm guessing Everton won't be a sell out either.

Having read the infantile and occasional repugnant responses to my considered, experienced and knowledgeable post, I am proud that I have never sunk to the same, to me, everyone's opinion counts, whether agreed with or not.
One poster commented that only 6,000 tickets have been sold for tonight's match, which supports my knowledgeable view that this competition is second class and that the best thing the Saints can do is get knocked out of it!
Premiership survival this season and consolidation in future seasons, is paramount, I'm sure NA and NC will agree with me.
Remember when 6,000 turn up at St Mary's tonight --- you read it here first!!!!

I have a plan. A plan so fiendish and cunning that no skunt, not even the one with the double brain cell, could lay claim to such a plan.

It was good to get a win under our belts on Saturday, Saints played very well but let's not get carried away.
Remember, you read it here first!
1) You DO need a hole in the head-you can't keep talking out of your ****.
2) You SHOULD get carried away- my suggestion Coventry.
As there is no Combination league these days an extended run in this competition would be good for our club: Giving more players and fans the opportunity to turn out, helping new players bed into the squad and others return from injury, whilst adding to the feel-good and general momentum that abounds currently. Costs and worth do not just appear on a bill or balance sheet, Tebourba.
