100% records at penalties for Saints!
9:32pm
This game is done and dusted
9:32pm
Jay Rodriguez gets a well deserved round of applause as he goes off for a rest with five minutes to go with youngster Sam Hoskins getting a brief run out
9:28pm
Jack Cork goes down with a knee injury. Able to walk off but not going to be further risked and a debut for young Andy Robinson
9:25pm
GOAL - 78 minutes - Bywater very nearly saved that but the power just about takes it over the line. Saints 2 Sheffield Wednesday 0
9:24pm
Saints win a penalty as De Ridder bursts into the box and goes down under the challenge of Mattock. Wednesday are sure it is a free kick rather than a penalty but Mark Halsey points to the spot
9:21pm
Reeves has been lively since coming on
9:19pm
Saints just need that second goal to put this to bed. If not then they might have to weather a storm in the final minutes
9:19pm
Change for Saints on 71 minutes - Ben Reeves on for Do Prado
Attendance tonight is 9,890
9:15pm
Double change for Wednesday on 66 minutes with Chris O'Grady and Jermaine Johnson replacing Paul Corry and Chris Maguire. Llera got the first yellow card
9:05pm
Little reminder to Saints that they need to get the seocnd goal. With 58 minutes on the clock Pecnik gets a shot in that Gazzaniga has to save
9:01pm
Still not much to report. Saints really are cruising
8:55pm
Quiet start to this half too. If Saints get a second then surely this game is all over. They probably have another couple of gears to slip into if they need it anyway
8:50pm
Joe Mattock on for Kieran Lee for Wednesday
8:50pm
Second half underway
8:48pm
The teams are back out.
8:32pm
Half time - Saints 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0
8:30pm
Saints cruising to a half time lead
8:26pm
Guly do Prado meets the ball with his head but it hits the bottom of post. Moments later Bywater has to make a great save from an unwitting header from his own man Miguel Llera
8:23pm
Wednesday try to rally but Gary Madine heads over the bar
8:20pm

Yeehaa Jay off the mark
8:20pm
That is a first goal for Rodriguez since his £7m summer move. Surely no coincidence that he is playing as an out and out striker tonight rather than out wide
8:19pm
GOAL - the deadlock is broken by Saints on the half hour mark. Richard Chaplow plays the ball into the feet of Rodriguez with his back to goal, he turns the defender and slots past Bywater with a right footed finish.
Saints 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0
8:16pm
Long ball down the middle from Gazzaniga puts Guly do Prado in as he outpaces Lleara but Bywater able to make the save
8:13pm
Saints lucky to see their former loanee Michail Antonio lift his effort on 25 minutes over the keeper but also over the bar after a defensive error
8:10pm
Rodriguez has another effort but his header from Steve De Ridder's cross goes wide.
8:05pm
Antonio has been moved over to the right in an attempt to get at Dan Seaborne who has been thrust into the side at left back
8:05pm
First chance for Saints. Defence splitting pass and great first touch from Jay Rodriguez puts the striker in on goal but shot too near to Bywater who gets down to save.
7:58pm
Saints playing with a slightly different formation with Guly Do Prado in the hole. Antonio is out on the left for Wednesday rather than his more familiar role on the right.
7:51pm
Quiet start to the game. Not much to report early on as both sides find their feet. Probably to be expected as quite a few players on the field haven't had much match time this season.
7:48pm
The game is underway
7:14pm
Half an hour to kick-off at St Mary's
7:09pm
The youngsters on the bench that may be unfamiliar to some are Andy Robinson and Dominic Gape. Big night for those lads, even if they don't make it on to the pitch.
7:02pm
Former Saints loanee Michail Antonio starts for Wednesday.
Sheff Wed: Bywater, Lee, Llera, Jones, Pecnik, Maguire, Madine, Semedo (c), Beevers, Antonio, Corry.
Subs: Jameson, Mayor, O'Grady, Mattock, Johnson, Rodri, Lavery.
6:59pm
Saints: Gazzaniga, Richardson, Yoshida, Hooiveld (c), Seaborne, Cork, Ward-Prowse, Chaplow, Guly, De Ridder, Rodriguez
Subs: K Davis, Reeves, Butterfield, Hoskins, Sinclair, Gape, Robinson.
6:58pm
Saints team is out. No debut for Boruc, Gazzaniga remains in goal. Jack Cork's first start of the season, Jos Hooiveld back from injury to partner Yoshida for the first time. De Ridder gets first start of the season.

All those looking for positive omens ahead of tonight's game should take into account Saints' fantastic record against Sheffield Wednesday. They have not lost to the Owls on home soil in their last eight meetings.
6:01pm
The game could resemble something of a reserve team match with both Nigel Adkins and Dave Jones expected to name vastly different sides to their regular league line-ups

It appears that the Saints fans are not taking it seriously because the club aren't.
Only about 10,000 at SMS.
SWFC probably think losing just 1 - 0 is quite a good result against a Premier League team, even though we aren't exactly using many PL players.

So, that's 23,000 short of capacity.
Let's take a closer look at that.
A fairly small crowd, for a relatively insignificant cup match, played between two reserve teams - that leaves enough empty seats to fit an entire capacity (21,100) Fratton Shed crowd in - is only 2,000 short of the 11,767 that packed the park for the crucial relegation 6-pointer against Walsall 10 days ago.
Oh! And our reserves won. Well done Jay. Happy days.

I would suggest that if you want to elevate yourself to, at least, those at a much higher level, like being at least a dim-wit - then you should enrol yourself at the TEBORBA school of knowing it all.
This way - we can ALL share a good laugh.
But, I did digress........atten
dance?
There could be more people in front of your computer than at Fratton Park though, if your mummy should come downstairs with her customer to check up on you.

Not looking good for Everton tonight. Hopefully that should dent their confidence a bit because it's not like they've put out a reserve team.

Did Pompey win tonight? If we get them in the next round we could really help them out by selling out their ground for them.

At St Mary's its the same W7 D5 L4 in the league.
In the FA an League Cups they have met 6 times with Saints winning 5 of them and losing just once.
Saints have scored 5 times in four of the meetings and have won by 3 or more goal margins 8 times........there's a obvious pattern there wouldn't you admit.....now FOADP...WTFILN

I must try and remember that before we moved to our lovely modern stadium we used to play in a small antiquated ground similar to farton krapt I suppose.

Skates just cant argue with the facts !!
And since both teams entered the football league, Saints have finished higher in 50 seasons and Pompey for 34 seasons. Says it all really. Southampton are the BEST team on the South Coast...FACT

By way of correcting a technicality, some of you are referring so often to the n'er do wells that you're all starting to sound like them. Therefore, I must spell it out:
KRAP NOTTARF is 'fratton park' backwards (any other anagrams should contain all these letters) there may be some other truthful one's out there?
Also, the Dell was a nice ground, and you disrespect our heritage to compare it with others.
upton park(which incidentally is NOT WHU's ground*) is KRAP NOTPU?
*officially the Boleyn Ground or West Ham Stadium.

Just to correct a small oversight on your behalf I think you'll find that Farton Krapt does actually contain all the letters required thus making it a more than suitable anagram of the sh1te hole that is Farton Krapt!
I would never disrespect our heritage and think you maybe taking my post far to seriously and missing the context in which it was written.
The comparisons between St Marys and Farton Krapt are a million light years apart but between The Dell and the aforementioned sh1t hole the shed they are not so far apart.
I hope this clarifies things for you and by the way I think most football fans know that West Hams ground is indeed called the Boleyn Ground as much as Newcastle's will always be known as St Jame's Park.
