THE son of a Saints legend is helping a rugby team find an edge over their opponents.

Marc Turner – son of Ian who turned out for Southampton between 1974-1978 and kept goal at Wembley in 1976 – has brought a new level of fitness to Tottonians RFC.

The club’s first XV has made a winning start to the season and spectators, coaches and players have all noticed a higher degree of stamina throughout the side.

Totts linked up with Marc at the beginning of the year and the squad has been looking sharper in the London 2 South-West League since his arrival.

The 28-year-old, from Ashurst on the edge of the New Forest , is in his final year at Chichester University where he is studying sports science.

That training, and extra knowledge gained from a strength and conditioning course, is being put to good use at Tottonians where Marc is no stranger.

He grew up with many of the players he is now helping and tried his hand at rugby when he was 19.

Marc worked as a teaching assistant at The Polygon School in Southampton and was keen to become fully qualified and teach sports science.

He said: “I think it took a couple of months for the Totts players to believe in what I was doing.

“It may have been difficult for them at first because I knew them and it was not taken so seriously but they have bought in to it and notice the difference.

“They have got it into their heads that they are fitter and that gives them confidence.

“And they can keep going longer and they tend to make less mistakes because they are switched on throughout the whole of the game game.”
