Actually I disagree there is still the opportunity for players without clubs to be signed. There must be some decent defenders around if we look hard enough

Yes I understand irony but why post a comment like that after a comment that was valid? I too would like to know why puncheon didn't start and also why he didn't come on as a sub. He has been a star 4 us and even scored last week even though it was a deflection. A fair enough question or two I think.

We're only putting the feelers out to anyone who might know why he didn't start. Ironic answers don't really get us anywhere.

Just for the record I try only to come on here when things are going well as I think it's too easy to moan.

So, you agree that Punch should have started. Okay, valid point from Thomas. I was surprised he didn't start.

But, who would you have left out?

Adam? Gaston? Jay? Rickie? JWP? Davis?

If, as I guess, it would have been Jay, and we'd have played one up front, a 5-man midfield - including Gaston playing behind Rickie, then would you have responded to those on here who would surely have asked why we didn't play 2 up front?

Some on here reckon we should start matches 4-4-2 (someone just asked that on Solent, in fact). Doubt that idea would get much support from any Prem manager.

Positives:
Looked good going forward
Ramirez - class and linked well with Lallana, Lamber & Ward Prowse
Ward-Prowse - had a good game
Fans - total support, superb sound and atmosphere

Negatives:
We lost shape for 20 crucial minutes, Clyne was left exposed for two of the Goals (no direct critiscism of him) but 2 on 1 left us wide open and they were ruthless.
Rodriguz - sorry very very poor, had a chance to put us 2 up and bottled it. Wasn't in the game seriously concerned about him.

We are going to have some tough away days, but keep the faith wehave played at Man City, Arsenal & Everton our first 3 away games

I have to say that this is one of the most sensible and intelligent comments that I have read on this or the News message boards - it's not very often that a physio or something can become a great football manager (and it pains me to say it but I think you have a class manager - who sadly I think wont survive under your MD) - but the idea that us fans know more than managers who see people train, watch DVDs of the opposition etc. is frankly ridiculous.....

I would hardly call those three players luxury, they are all mediocre championship players and always will be and that's where all of you will be stuck next year in the championship PUP, PTID

Well you'll probably think that description fits me too (harshly in my opinion).

If you check you'll see I've been posting for a while as Frattonparked (and only with that name). You'll also see that whilst I enjoy Saints losing (didint happen much last year - seems to be happening quit a bit this year) I also was genuinley pleased to see a south coast team in the premiership and ideally would like both teams there (can't see that happening for a while....). I have good friends that are Saints supporters and enjoy friendly rivalry - the riots after our last few games are stains on both of our clubs. I also rate your manager but dont think he'll survive under NC (I dont think he thinks he will either).

and I agree with you about the stupidity of some of the fans on both sides that take things to far.the rivalry should be just banter and pi$$ taking, not violence. and i'm sure that the vast majority of fans on both sides see it that way.It's just a few that have to take it to far but thats society today i'm afraid.

Fair assessment, thing is you can't play attractive attacking football without negleting the defence. Unfortunately our defence hasn't been improved on enough (for whatever reason), I feel we will have to compromise on our attack play to help cover the defence.
Punch and spiderman are curious omissions from the villa victory team.

I don't think you're all that far wrong or all that negative, but I don't think the season is going as horribly wrong as you make out. If we'd had the same luck against Manure as Spurs had today, we'd have beaten them and, on another day we could have beaten or drawn with City. It didn't quite happen. In other matches, it will.

As for improving the defence, as we don't know how many players NC/NA tried to sign but couldn't get (getting the right players isn't the piece of cake some would have us believe - Buttner, for example), I don't think we can really pass intelligent comment.

No doubt, one more quality CB must be on NA's Christmas list.

There are no easy games in this league, so you're right about Fulham. However, with an almost fully fit squad (Spiderman out today, Lee coming back, Cork, we hope, by December), we'll do okay. I'll gladly disagree with you and predict 2-1 Saints.

You have to build from the back and unfortunately Adkins hasn't done that which will lead to his demise in this league. A championship defence was never going to work in this league. And changing our system was never going to help our cause. Is Nigel good enough? Personally I don't think so. There's no room for sentiment in football.

I am sure your comment about someone telling NA about our defence has problems was tongue in cheek. I sincerely hope so!

After every game (Aston Villa excepted) it has been said lessons will be learnt. They may well be addressing the defensive problems on the training ground but unfortunately it only counts on match days.

2 goals scored per game (against top sides) does I agree make excellent reading but what is the point if the opposition score 3.

Our next two games - Fulham & West Ham - will I believe define our season and hopefully will yield at least 4 points. That I think will be the least NC will accept before taking dramatic take action.

They are important games I agree. But will not, I don't think, define our season. So many more game to be played.

Don't think NC will take drastic action against NA. They seem to have a strong relationship. It would be absolute disaster to get rid of NA.

He is a good manager.Too often when results aren't going well the answer is always "buy someone" or "sack the manager". NC would not be that stupid.

i thought you were right earlier as it goes, we had some really good chances and didnt put them away, everton did. i thought it would be tough to get a win against everton yesterday and would have settled for a draw, however we lost so on to the next game. after being around the top of the league for the last 2 seasons i think some of our `new` supporters think we should be doing the same this year, that was never going to happen, we wont go down and will finish around 14th this season, we can then push on and improve the squad next summer ready to get a top 10 finish.

what a piece of work you are! if you dont rate fox thats ok, i think he is ok, a lot of full backs in the prem are not great defenders! some have even had great international careers glen johnson for a start.

so we should send out j-rod on loan and get billy back? it is understood by many that billy couldnt settle down south and has no pace, j-rod has limited game time most of which has been on the wing. like most strikers j-rod is a form player, remember beattie?, and once he has a goal or 2 in the prem will be quality, problem he has is rickie is scoring well and takes the main strikers place, so adkins would have to go 4-4-2 for j-rod to play in position and most dont like that formation.
T. lee is injured! hurt his elbow on int break, most saints fans know that of course as it has been widely reported in the press and saints forums.

LOL im neither a WUM or a skate, have been a season ticket holder for the past 10 years and was at Forest Away we were already relegated to league 1... was you? Correct me if im wrong but im pretty sure taking fox off last weekend completely changed the game and his attacking so far this season has also been woeful. Yes i do remember "one season wonder" Beattie! I bet you were one of them people who thought Neil Mccan was a good player and travel away with saints travel eating boiled eggs telling people to keep quiet on the coach! As for J-Rod i hope he proves me wrong but he is definetely not worth £7million IMO, Michu at Swansea would have been a much better and cheaper aquisition.
