Heathens are so clinical
Fareham Heathens kept control of Snows Group Hampshire 2 with another clinical performance, this time against Fawley.
A narrow defeat on the opening day of the season is the only blot on an otherwise near perfect record for Heathens.
Since then they have reeled off ten victories on the bounce, allowed all those opponents a total of just 25 points and amazingly not conceded a try in the last eight games.
Heathens expected to be put to the test on the Waterside with an improved Fawley RFC having an eye on promotion themselves.
The home side produced some courageous and, at times, desperate defending, and held tight for half-an-hour, apart from a penalty from Dan Lee.
Paul Charlton then made the breakthrough for Fareham to take his side into the break 8-0 up.
It took a long-range penalty from Fawley’s Alex McKenzie Grist to put three points past Fareham who soon stepped up a gear - picking up the extra bonus point with three more tries.
First Matt Smith’s out-stretched arm got the ball over the line in the corner, teammate Rob Brown raced over a minute later and Tom McPherson finished off a kick-and-chase from fullback Brown. The rest of the points came from Lee’s boot.
Heathens coach, Mark Flower said: “We did not really start playing for 60 minutes but fair play to Fawley who kept us out of it for some time.
“To be on top at the halfway stage is a good place to be.”
Petersfield are just one point behind Heathens after a 60-12 home win over Aldershot and Fleet.
Third placed Locks Heath Pumas beat Ventnor 10-5 at home.
Nick Destafano found the space between the sticks with his third penalty attempt to give side a 3-0 half-time lead.
Captain Tom O’Grady unselfishly fed Dave Parker after the break for the game’s first try and Destafano added the extra two points.
Ventnor hit back with a try with ten minutes to go but Pumas held tight.
Another two players were added to Pumas’ long injury list during a game which went to uncontested scrums.
Charlie Hayes and Matt Lawrence shared man of the match status.
