SOUTHAMPTON AC’s Louise Webb ran the race of her life to finish third in the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase at the British Championships in Birmingham.

In doing so, the 25-year-old knocked an incredible 13 seconds off her personal best to record her first sub-ten minute time of 9 mins 57.18 secs.

It took her third in the UK rankings behind Rio-bound Lennie Waite, who finished second, and race winner Rosie Clarke.

“Whilst the time wasn’t inside the 9.45 qualifying standing for the European Championships and Olympic games, it was nevertheless a huge pb for Lou and a breakthrough sub-ten minute run for a hard-working athlete with a full-time job and no funding,” said Southampton AC’s Andy Fisher.

Southampton’s Freya Jones threw over 50 metres – a season’s best 50.30 - to take fourth place in the women’s javelin and Sophie Merritt shot putted 13.63m for seventh spot.

It gave the club three top-ten British Championship placings on their very own ‘super Sunday’ for the women.

Elsewhere, Southampton sprinter Oli Bromby was competing in the Junior International Gala in Mannheim, Germany.

He won his 100m heat in 10.42 seconds with a slight following wind of +0.5 metres per second.

That was some way down on the other heat winners. Jack Hale of Australia clocked a season’s best of 10.21 (legal wind, +1.4) and Bromby’s fellow Briton Rechmial Miller, the World Youth bronze medallist, clocked a heavily wind assisted 10.23 (+2.4).

With Miller withdrawing from the final to concentrate on the relay, Shirley-based Bromby suffered a poor start before recovering to finish second behind Hale in 10.49 seconds. By then, the weather had deteriorated with heavy rain.

Bromby returned to the track under an hour later, running a strong first leg for GB Juniors in the 4x100m relay which set up a lead they would hold for the rest of the race. That bodes well for next month’s IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland (July 19-24).
