SOUTHAMPTON AC’s men made it two wins out of two in the Southern Counties Veterans' Athletics League Hampshire Division.

They dominated from the off at Portsmouth to finish 39 points clear of second-placed Basingstoke.

The red and white stripes hit the ground running with a clean sweep of 200 metres sprint victories from M35 Mark Collins (23.9 seconds), Simon Ciaravella (25.9), M50 Steve Beak (25.1) and M60 Vic Novell (29.5).

There was a club debut from M70 Alan Forse (31.3), while M65s Mike Applegate and Mike Smears ran personal bests (pbs) of 32.1 and 34.5 respectively.

The opening field event, the discus, produced another maximum points tally from M35 Graham Lay (35.26 metres), M50 Andy Turner (31.41) and M60 Mike Ferne (38.01).

Back on the track, the M35 category saw Jon Tilt (2.14.9) and Andy Morgan-Lee (2.27.4) achieve double third in the A/B-string 800m, while Jon Grainger timed his run to perfection to grab M50 victory in the final few strides with 2.19.5.

M35 Darren Clissold claimed pole vault first (2.60) and triple jump second (10.51) with M50 Beak triple jumping his way to third (9.34).

M35 Lay added javelin victory to his earlier discus success with a throw of 43.45, while M50 Steve Dobson placed third (30.37m).

The penultimate track event, the 3000m, brought another good Southampton points haul, with M35 Mark Causebrook clocking 9.26.8 on his debut and Andrew Griggs posting 9.29.9. They finished second A-string and first B-string respectively.

Peter Costley posted a season’s best 10.02.9 for M50 victory with Sid DeLara (11.21.8) third M60.

There was a pb from Aaron Froukains (9.44.7), also making his club debut, while Nick Willson and Gordon Westley ran 10.58.0 and 11.54.2.

The evening’s last event, the 4x400m relay, saw Tilt use all his experience on the anchor leg to overhaul Winchester coming into the home straight. It followed good work by Grainger, Beak and Ciaravella on the earlier legs.
