ELEVEN-year-old Romsey runner Annie Mann turned in a right royal performance on London’s big stage to celebrate victory in the Vitality Westminster Mile.

The event is held on the world’s most iconic mile, starting on The Mall and finishing in front of Buckingham Palace.

Over 5,000 people turned out in a raft of competitive and fun races, including an Olympians Mile that saw past heroes such as Seb Coe and Jo Pavey taking part.

The business end of the day was the flagship British Athletics One-Mile Road Championships which attracted athletes of all ages from right across Great Britain.

After a below-par run in 2016, Annie was determined to make 2017 her year and add to an already impressive list of successes, including the Hampshire Schools’ Cross-Country, Hampshire Cross-Country, Hampshire League Cross-Country, the Great South Run and the Hampshire Championships 1500 metres.

The talented youngster did not disappoint, crossing the line in a new record of 5mins 33secs to lift the prestigious under-11 girls’ title.

She explained: “After a disappointing run in 2016, I really wanted to win this event. It was great to get the medal in front of Buckingham Palace.”

Annie attends Romsey’s Halterworth Community Primary School and runs for Southampton AC and Halterworth Harriers. She is coached by proud dad James, who said: “The consistency Annie has shown this season is the thing that has impressed me the most.

“She is off on a nice break now before she starts competing again in September.

“However, we are going to head to Spain for our holiday and she is already looking at the venue to see if there are any Spanish races she can run in whilst we’re out there!”
