Danny Briggs has been included in England's one-day squad for the first time.

The Hampshire star was this morning named in the 16-man squad to face Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates next week.

He is also named in the Twenty20 squad for the three-match series played after the four one-day internationals.

Last season, Briggs became the youngest English spinner to take 100 first-class wickets since Derek Underwood, following an outstanding tour of the West Indies with the England Lions.

But at this stage of his career he is best suited to the one-day format and conditions in the UAE should suit him.

He is in fine form, having taken 16 wickets at 21.5 while bowling with his usual economy on the England Lions tours of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The 20-year-old would become the first cricketer from the Isle of Wight to play for England.

His inclusion in the England squad sets up the possibility of a fascinating duel with his Hampshire t20 teammate Shahid Afridi, who returns to Pakistan's colours this month.

Also included is another uncapped prodigy in Somerset's Jos Buttler.

But there is no place for Ian Bell.

Briggs is one of three spinners in both squads, alongside Graeme Swann and fellow slow left-armer Samit Patel.

National selector Geoff Miller said: "We have selected two squads that include both experienced international players and younger players who have performed strongly for England Lions in recent months and deserve an opportunity to further test themselves against quality opposition.

"Playing against Pakistan in the UAE will be challenging but it is important that these players continue to develop their skills so that we are able to make strides in limited-overs cricket, particularly on the subcontinent."
