Injury-hit Hampshire may call for Taylor
Billy Taylor
Billy Taylor

BILLY TAYLOR is ready to help Hampshire out of a crisis - IF he is asked.

Hampshire are without FOUR of their first-choice seam attack for the LV County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton, which starts tomorrow.

Manager Paul Terry is already having to cope without the retired James Bruce, who took more Championship wickets than any Hampshire bowler except Shane Warne last season.

Now he is also without captain Dimitri Mascarenhas, Chris Tremlett, Shane Bond and David Balcombe.

Mascarenhas continues to kick his heels on the sub-continent while the Rajasthan Royals lead the Indian Premier League.

Tremlett and Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry are playing for the England Lions in a four-day match against New Zealand at the Rose Bowl from Thursday.

And a double injury blow has stretched Terry's seam-bowling resources even further.

Fast-bowler Bond suffered a calf strain during the Friends Provident Trophy defeat against Somerset on Friday night.

And Balcombe strained his side while making his comeback from a serious back injury for the Hampshire Academy the next day.

Both will undergo scans today but are definitely out of the trip to Taunton.

David Griffiths is certain to be recalled from the second XI and is likely to share the new ball with James Tomlinson, but they have only made 28 Championship appearances between them.

Sean Ervine will provide some experience but is not the bowler he was before suffering a serious knee injury in 2005 so, at this late stage, it would seem there is no option for Terry but to ask Taylor if he would mind playing his first Championship match for Hampshire for nearly two years.
