Hampshire have been promoted as champions of the LV County Championship's second division after James Tomlinson took 6-48 against Glamorgan at the Swalec Stadium.

Tomlinson's outstanding 11-over spell either side of lunch secured a 292-run win in Cardiff.

Glamorgan were bowled out for 152 as Hampshire secured the title by finishing three points clear of Worcestershire.

Bowling over the wicket, former Cardiff UCCE student Tomlinson found conditions to his liking on his return to Wales, taking 3-5 in eight balls before lunch (5-0-33-3).

The left-armer was soon on a hat-trick after Jimmy Adams set Glamorgan an unlikely 444 to win by declaring Hampshire's second innings at 258-9 this morning.

Tomlinson claimed the big wickets of left-handers Jacques Rudolph and Mark Wallace at the beginning of his fourth over.

After trapping Rudolph lbw with an inswinger, a stunning diving catch by James Vince at third slip accounted for Wallace.

Chris Cooke blocked the hat-trick ball but the right-hander was trapped lbw in Tomlinson's next over.

Tomlinson continued to move the ball both ways in claiming three wickets in his first three overs after lunch.

Umpire Jeremy Lloyds was in danger of a repetitive strain injury as he raised his index finger for another two lbw dismisals after Tomlinson trapped left-hander Will Bragg and then right-hander David Lloyd.

Then Tomlinson found Jim Allenby's outside edge and when Graham Wagg played on against Coles, Glamorgan were 86-7.

Tomlinson was replaced by Chris Wood after recording his best figures for four years. His fellow left- armer had Dean Cosker caught on the square-leg boundary and Aneurin Donald top edged to fine-leg after a run-a-ball 59, before Imran Tahir claimed the final wicket.

After resuming their second innings on 175-3 this morning, Hampshire added 83-6 in 13 overs before Adams declared, following Coles’ dismissal.

Allenby took five of the wickets to fall to finish with career-best match figures of 10-128.

But it needed a record-breaking Glamorgan performance for the Welsh county to deny Hampshire.

They had to surpass their record match-winning fourth-innings total of 367-6  - made thanks to Viv Richards' 164* against a Hampshire attack including Malcolm Marshall at Northlands Road in 1990 - and Hampshire have never conceded a match-winning total of more than 404 in the last innings .

They scored at more than a run-a-ball in extending their lead before giving themselves more than five sessions in which to take the ten wickets.

Tom Alsop (12) was bowled at the end of the day’s fifth over and Adam Wheater (14), James Vince (48) and Chris Wood (1) all departed in the space of 11 balls.

Then Sean Ervine bashed a 14-ball 21, including four fours, before he holed out to long-off. Captain Adams declared when Coles (ten) pulled to deep mid-wicket three balls later.
