Rookie seamer Tom Barber took three wickets on the first day of Hampshire’s two-day friendly against Nottinghamshire in Barbados.

The 19 year-old left-armer was the pick of the Hampshire attack with 3-56 as Notts made 287-6 from their 90 overs with the help of a Samit Patel century.

Patel faced 154 balls and hit 18 fours and a six over square leg against 18 year-old South Africa fast bowler Brad Wheal, who has signed a development contract and will be playing in the Southern Electric Premier League for Havant.

Former England batsman Patel retired, as did Chris Read (43), while Riki Wessels became one of Barber’s three victims when he skied to Jimmy Adams at mid-off.

Former England U19 star Barber, who took two wickets in as many balls when he made his second appearance for Hampshire in last season’s Royal London One-Day Cup, is in the second year of a two-year development contract.

The other wicket-takers at the Isolation CC were spinners Will Smith (1-13), Danny Briggs (1-37) and Brad Taylor 1-50.

Hampshire are batting today before ending their tour with another two-day friendly, against Warwickshire.
