Hampshire prospect Joe Weatherley faced an uncomfortable spell of life in the fast lane, becoming the first victim as England Under-19s lost four wickets for only 11 runs in the 4-day Youth Test against Australia at the WACA.
Skippering England, Weatherley won the toss, but saw his top order crumble against teenager New South Wales speedster Henry Thornton, who took 4-17.
The King Edward VI student lasted 20 balls before being caught for three.
Weatherley had barely enough time to unstrap his pads before three England team-mates were back in the WACA pavilion with the tourists reeling at 11-4.
Kent’s Ryan Davies (60) and Warwickshire all-rounder Aaron Thomason (40) lifted England from 32-5 to 172 all out, Hampshire’s Brad Taylor being trapped leg before wicket for seven.
There was no place in the England side for Academy leg spinner Mason Crane, despite a 4-11 return in a warm-up match last week.
Australia progressed to 103-3 by stumps, Weatherley snapping up a catch at slip.
Hosts captain Jaron Morgan, who played Southern Electric Premier League cricket for Bashley (Rydal) last season, fell for 19.
