CHRIS Wood enjoyed another successful night in Cardiff, taking a career best 4-16 as Hampshire beat Glamorgan at the Swalec Stadium.

On the ground where his heroics helped Hampshire win the 2012 final against Yorkshire, Wood hit an unbeaten 18 before starring with the ball as Glamorgan were beaten by 21 runs .

With Hampshire defending 148-8, Wood took the big wickets of Chris Cooke and Colin Ingram as Glamorgan were reduced to 13-3 during the six-over powerplay.

After a 20-minute break for rain he returned to dismiss Wayne Parnell and Andrew Salter, bowled and caught behind, with successive deliveries as Glamorgan limped to 127-8.

Hampshire were indebted to Sean Ervine’s 35-ball 49 (three fours, two sixes) – the left-hander’s highest T20 score for two years - after a poor start of their own.

Ervine arrived at the crease with eight balls left of the powerplay, which Hampshire ended on 28-3 after losing James Vince (four), Jimmy Adams (five) and Michael Carberry (four).

Vince nicked the fifth ball of the match to first slip and Adams was caught at short third-man in South Africa left-armer Parnell’s first two overs for Glamorgan.

After replacing Parnell, medium-pacer Graham Wagg (4-27) had Michael Carberry (four) caught behind via the left-hander’s pads.

Ervine received useful support from Adam Wheater (19) and Will Smith (30) but soon lost Owais Shah (12) when Ingram held on to a low catch at mid-wicket.

Wheater, full of confidence after his career-best 36 in the defeat against Kent last week, hit four fours in his 11-ball 19 as Hampshire reached 70-4 after ten overs.

But he was caught at deep mid-on in the 11th, ending their partnership of 34 (23 balls) at 73-5.

Ervine’s 42-run partnership with Smith, from 33 deliveries, ended when he was lbw attempting to reverse sweep Wagg soon after depositing his second six, against Salter’s off-spin, into the River Taff.

Smith holed out to mid-off midway through the penultimate over but after being dropped on 12, Wood ensured he had a decent total to bowl at. After Smith bowled Wright with the second ball of the reply, the left-armer bowled former Bournemouth star Cooke with his first ball before Ingram, played on.

Glamorgan were 23 -3 at the end of their powerplay and the 58-ball, 69-run stand that followed between Mark Wallace (37) and Jacques Rudolph (38) was ended by Ervine's important return catch
