HAMPSHIRE legend Nigel Gray's 25-year career as the county’s head groundsman is over.

But Gray, who stepped down after Hampshire’s last home game against Yorkshire, will continue in a consultancy role.

“I’ll be helping with the transition period,” he explained.

“Hopefully after that I can spend more time with my wife and not have to worry about the weather forecast so much!”

Gray, 62, was named Groundsman of the Year for the third time last season, and in 2012 became only the third groundsman in Hampshire Cricket history to be awarded a testimonial, after Jesse Hopkins (1922) and Ernie Knights (1975).

Having joined Hampshire in 1989, he oversaw the county’s move from Northlands Road and has played a key role in developing the Ageas Bowl into a Test stadium.
