HAMPSHIRE teenager Brad Wheal is hoping to play at the World T20 in March after taking a wicket on his international debut - for Scotland.
The 19 year-old South African joined Hampshire last year with the long-term aim to qualify for England through the seven-year residency rule.
In the meantime, he is enjoying his first taste of international cricket for Scotland, who he qualifies for through his mum Lorraine (his grandmother lives in Glasgow and his aunt and cousins are from Kilmarnock).
Wheal, whose eight first-class wickets last season included 4-101 against Middlesex at Lord’s, finished with 1-44 from his 8.1 overs in an ICC World Cricket League Championship in Hong Kong.
He took the last Hong Kong wicket as the hosts were bowled out for 259 and was two not out as Scotland were all out for 150 in reply.
Wheal was put in contact with Cricket Scotland by his career management specialist and former coach Paddy Steytler, director of Futura Sports Agency, who also used to coach Scotland captain Preston Mommsen.
Steytler said: “Things escalated when the Scotland coaching staff saw him in a 2nd XI T20 game at the AgeasBowl...fingers crossed for the T20 World Cup.”
