James Vince was out in the sixth over of his World T20 debut as England suffered a spectacular collapse against Afghanistan - before beating the minnows by 15 runs.

The Hampshire captain opened the batting with Jason Roy after replacing the injured Alex Hales.

But he was out for 22 (18 balls), caught and bowled via a leading edge, as England were reduced to 57-6, having been 42-4 at the end of the six-over powerplay.

An unbroken partnership of 55 between Moeen Ali (40*) and David Willey (20*) at least gave England a total of 142-7 to defend.

It looked like they would get many more when Vince began his fourth T20 innings for England.

Vince had signalled his intent at the beginning of the third over, when he came down the track to loft slow left-armer Hamza over wide mid-off for his first four.

But he was fortunate to survive against the next ball, a quicker delivery that ended with a missed stumping.

Jason Roy was the first to go, bowled at the end of the same over.

Vince managed three more boundaries – a glorious straight drive against the left-arm seam of Shahpur and cuts through the covers against Hamza at the beginning and end of the fifth over.

But he gifted a simple return catch after coming down the track to a slower ball midway through the next over, off-spinner Mohammad Nabir's first.

England captain Eoin Morgan, who had won the toss, was out next ball.

Ben Stokes survived the hat-trick delivery but Joe Root (12) was then run out, Jos Buttler (6) departed to a spectacular catch and Ben Stokes played on to leave England in the mire at 57-6.

After a stand of 28 with Moeen, Chris Jordan (15) was also undone by a leading edge, at which point England were 85-7.

But Willey helped Moeen add 57 from the last 33 balls before taking two wickets in he first three overs of Afghanistan's reply as England restricted the minnows to 127-9.

With the wicket greener than expected, there was no place for Hampshire's Liam Dawson, with Liam Plunkett instead drafted in to replace Hampshire new boy Reece Topley.
