Hampshire (423 & 201) lost to Surrey (637-7declared) by an innings and 13 runs

Hampshire have lost their relegation scrap against Surrey by an innings and 13 runs.

When a record tenth-wicket partnership between Lewis McManus and Brad Wheal finally ended this morning, Hampshire followed on needing to bat 84 overs to save the game.

But they were all out for 201, with 39 balls left, after losing four wickets for three runs in 3.1 overs.

Earlier, McManus and Wheal put on another 25 to take their stand to 96 (in 37.1 overs) – a Hampshire record for the last wicket against Surrey - before Aaron Finch ended it with a sensational direct hit to run out Wheal from 30 yards away.

Hampshire were all out for 423 - 214 behind Surrey’s 637-7declared – when Wheal was beaten at the non-striker’s end by Finch’s throw from mid-wicket as McManus returned for a second.

McManus, 117 overnight, ended his innings unbeaten on 132 (265 balls, 19 fours, two sixes).

Hampshire’s previous highest tenth-wicket stand against Surrey was 90 between Dimi Mascarenhas and Simon Francis at The Oval in 2000.

Needing 84 overs to survive , Hampshire reached 31-1 from 18 at lunch, with Jimmy Adams (16) caught behind after nicking a Stuart Meaker delivery angled across him.

Tom Alsop (5) was caught behind pushing forward to the second ball after lunch, from Surrey captain Batty.

And after adding 69 in 26 overs with Ryan McLaren, captain Will Smith (28) played on against his opposite number.

He was the first of two wickets to fall in the last three overs before tea as Hampshire ended the penultimate session on 107-4, still 107 behind on what was a decent surface by fourth-day standards.

Shortly after McLaren reached an 86-ball fifty, Wheater's off stump was uprooted as he shouldered arms against the last ball before the interval, as Stuart Meaker began to find some reverse swing.

It got worse shortly after tea as Batty struck in successive overs to reduce Hampshire to 121-6.

Ervine (5) was caught at leg slip and then McLaren, having hit two fours in four balls to move to 59, was out to the last ball of the 55th over.

A tense finish was ensured when McManus was finally out second time around for 35, lbw to Batty, to leave Hampshire 198-7 with ten overs remaining.

When Gareth Andrew (0) became Batty's sixth victim three balls later, caught at second slip, and Gareth Berg (38) was lbw in the following over, Hampshire were still 16 behind.

It was all over when, with 6.3 overs remaining, Mason Crane was caught behind to a brute of a ball from Meaker.

Hampshire are now 23 points behind Surrey, after taking five to the visitors' 23, but still have game in hand on the third-from bottom county.
