Hampshire stars Mason Crane and Brad Wheal have signed contract extensions that will see them remain at the club until at least the end of the 2019 season.

Both players’ current deals were set to expire at the end of next season, but they have signed new three-year contracts.

Leg-spinner Crane has taken 45 first-class wickets at 40.7 since making his debut last year as well as 21 limited-overs wickets.

Crane became the youngest Hampshire debutant to take a first-class 'five-fer' when he took 5-35 against Warwickshire in June 2015.

He said: “I’m really excited to be committing my immediate future to Hampshire Cricket.

"With the core of the young players that the club now has, I firmly believe that the sky is the limit as to what this group can do moving forward.”

Wheal moved to Hampshire from his native South Africa for the beginning of last season after being spotted by Hampshire’s former first-team coach, Dale Benkenstein.

He has taken 30 wickets at 38.06 in 13 first-class matches for Hampshire - including a match-winning 6-51 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge last year.

Last season the 20 year-old also starred in the Royal London One-Day Cup (seven wickets at 20.88) while his five T20 wickets at 25.8 included 2-17 from four overs to clinch an unlikely win at Sussex live on Sky Sports.

Wheal who also made his ODI and IT20 debuts for Scotland earlier this year, said: “I am delighted to have signed and committed my future to Hampshire until the end of the 2019 season – I’m really looking forward to the next three years.”
