JAMES Vince and Tom Alsop both made half-centuries as Hampshire dominated the penultimate day of their pre-season programme.

Vince, who remains Hampshire’s captain until George Bailey arrives next month made an impressive 90 (114 balls) before the county extended their lead over Cardiff MCCU to 462 going into the last day of the three-day friendly at The Ageas Bowl.

Opener Tom Alsop laid the foundations for Hampshire’s second-innings 271-6 with an 80-ball 62 (11 fours) after three-wicket salvos for Fidel Edwards (12-3-22-3), Brad Wheal (11-5-32-3) and new signing Asher Hart (6.3-1-17-3) skittled the students for 98.

Hampshire needed only 12.3 overs to take the last four wickets after Cardiff began day two on 59-6.

Wheal bowled Jack Scriven and Aron Nijjar in successive overs during his final spell (5-1-21-2).

Edwards had number ten David O’Sullivan, a namesake of one of Hampshire’s 1973 County Championship winners, caught behind by Lewis McManus before former Durham academy star Asher Hart ended Cardiff’s resistance with his third and final ball of the day.

Adams was caught behind for 19 shortly after lunch, having put on 65 with the more fluent Alsop, who was also caught behind seven overs later.

But Vince continued to rattle along.

He put on 63 in 12 overs with Sean Ervine (23) and reached fifty with one of his ten fours, a lofted drive over mid-on.

Liam Dawson was soon caught behind against the seam-up of Bermudan medium-pacer Kamau Leverock.

But Vince added a further 42 with McManus before he was caught behind against the off-spin of Jeremy Lawlor.

McManus’s valuable 31 (52 balls, three fours) and an unbeaten 19 from Ryan Stevenson ensured Hampshire had a 450-plus lead by the close.

Hampshire begin their Specsavers County Championship campaign against Yorkshire at Headingley on Friday.
