LIAM Dawson was out for a two-ball duck on his home Test debut before England were all out for 458 against South Africa at Lord’s.

The Hampshire all-rounder was lbw to a Morne Morkel delivery that nipped back down the Lord’s slope. The decision was reviewed, but replays showed it to be hitting the top of leg stump.

Having started day two on 357-5, England added 101, largely thanks to a 47-ball 57 from Stuart Broad, who brought up his half-century with successive sixes, pulled and hooked against Morkel.

Dawson did not get off to the best of starts with the ball, before finishing with 8-1-45-0 as South Africa reached 214-5 at the end of day two.

Brought on to bowl as early as the 14th over, the slow left-armer was taken off after a first spell of 4-0-29-0 against Proteas captain Dean Elgar (54) and Hashim Amla (29).

Dawson replaced James Anderson when he came back on to bowl the 47th over.

His first ball back was a long-hop that Theunis de Bruyn (48) dispatched for four.

But Dawson responded with a maiden against the same batsman before finishing with a much-improved second spell (4-1-16-0), bookended by boundaries from De Bruyn.
