THE first ever Southampton Juniors parkrun has been voted an overwhelming success.

Around 70 children aged 4-14 took part in the inaugural event at the city’s Riverside Park yesterday morning.

“Some took part with their parents, while there were also a few PE teachers there cheering on their pupils,” said event organiser James Saunders.

“We had a good turn-out and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.”

The 2k events – free to enter – will take place at Riverside Park every Sunday.

Though Southampton is the first place in Hampshire to host Junior parkruns, Saunders is confident they won’t be the last.

Eastleigh Borough Council got in touch with me last week, and I know there’s interest in the Winchester area.

“We had runners from as far afield as Winchester and Portsmouth yesterday.

“We have been contacting local schools, sending them posters, and I know some have mentioned the Junior parkruns in assemblies and PE lessons.”

Southampton AC’s Sam Costley was the first boy to finish yesterday, while first girl to finish was Winchester AC’s Isla Allan – who was second overall.
