Three talented members of the Australia team which reached the semi-finals of the recent ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the Emirates will be playing in the locally based ECB Southern Electric Premier League this summer.

Top order duo Jaron Morgan and Damien Mortimer and pace bowler Cameron Valente are joined by Nick Buchanan, son of Australia’s former coach John Buchanan, writes MIKE VIMPANY.

Alongside wicketkeeper Ben McDermott, son of former Aussie fast bowler Craig McDermott, who will be playing for Henley, they form the second intake of promising Australian players, who will be based at The Ageas Bowl under the Elite International Cricket Academy.

Morgan, a powerful, highly rated left-hander from top WACA Pennant club Joondalup, will be plying his trade in the New Forest at Bashley (Rydal).

The 18-year-old has already hit a century and captained Australia Under-19s.

He is a rookie member of Perth Scorchers, who won this year’s Big Bash twenty20.

Mortimer, from New South Wales, is allocated to Bashley’s neighbours Lymington, who are captained by Simon Beetham this season.

Mortimer had a disappointing Under-19 CWC, but according to Australia Test great Greg Chappell, now CA’s National Talent Manager “has the potential to go all the way” in cricket.

Quicks Buchanan and Valente plan a few uncomfortable Saturday afternoons in the fast lane for Premier League batsmen.

Buchanan, at 22 the oldest of the intake, will spearhead the Ventnor attack at Steephill.

He was named in Australia’s squad for the Under-19 World Cup in 2010 and has twice played in the Big Bash for the Brisbane Heat.

Totton & Eling bound Valente, from South Australia, was the leading wicket-taker at the Australia Under-19 carnival this winter and, prior to playing in the recent CWC in Dubai, represented Australia at Under-17 level.

Chappell said: “He is a clever medium pace bowler who mixes up his pace and bowls with good control, and is a very handy lower middle-order batsman.”
