James Haggaty’s maiden Southern Electric Premier League century celebrations were cut short by a badly gashed hand and a four-wicket defeat by Bashley (Rydal), which leaves his Totton & Eling side five points off the Premier Division basement.

Haggaty hit six sixes and 13 fours in a chanceless and competitive best 137, which under-pinned Totton’s 253-9.

But he finished a loser – and with a nasty injury to his left-hand – as Bashley chased the target down to end a seven-match winless run.

Haggaty, who shared a century second-wicket stand with Darron Augustus (48), held Totton’s innings together as the innings capitulated from 213-3, principally against spinner James Morris, who finished with 4-12.

The former Hampshire Academy all-rounder certainly ended his knock in style, hitting Simon Watkins (2-76) for three sixes before perishing in the deep.

The Bashley reply received a solid start with Michael Porter (60) and Neil Thurgood (22) sharing 65 for the first wicket.

Porter, with a six and 12 clean cut boundaries, looked in particularly good nick before missing a straight one.

South Australian prospect Cameron Valente made a double breakthrough by dismissing Richard Morris (16) and Sam Thomson But James Morris (58) and Australia Under-19 batsman Jaron Morgan, with a back-to-form 48 not out, then put on 60 for the fifth wicket to take Bashley to within sight of victory, the visitors reaching 254-6 from 50.3 overs.

Haggaty (2-34) left the field shortly before the end with blood streaming from already gashed webbing in his left hand.
