Lawrie steals the show
LAWRIE PRITTIPAUL
LAWRIE PRITTIPAUL

LAWRIE PRITTIPAUL returned to his old Rose Bowl haunts to hit a magnificent century and end the Hampshire Academy's threematch winning start to the ECB Southern Electric Premier League season.

His 135 pointed title holders Havant towards a 62-run win over the all-teenage Young Hawks and established a 16-point lead at the top of the table. Challengers Totton & Eling, who won easily at Andover, are 20 points adrift.

Prittipaul stole the show on the Rose Bowl Nursery Ground, cracking three sixes and 18 fours in a superb display of front-foot attacking shots and pulls.

His knock completely took the pressure off the remainder of the Havant batsmen, who simply occupied the non-striker's end for long periods.

At 125-4, Havant's innings had reached a potential crossroads, but the Academy had to get Prittipaul out if they were to repeat last year's win over the eventual champions. Gamely as they tried, they didn't succeed and once Prittipaul and Richard Hindley came together, the runs flowed.

Seamer Jake Lilley (3-50) and left-arm spinner Danny Briggs (1-27) were the pick of the Academy bowlers, who perished under a pre-tea onslaught from Hindley, who finished with 66 not out.

A towering 273-8 was always going to be a tough challenge for the Academy, who ideally needed one of their top four to make a century.

The out-of-sorts Benny Howell fell cheaply, while Liam Dawson (31), who surprisingly did not bowl, seldom threatened to repeat his magnificent 2007 match winning century against Havant.

James Vince (50) batted nicely, but with runs on the board Havant were content to throw the ball to their spin duo Hindley (4-54) and Phil Loat (3-62) - and let the Young Hawks make mistakes.

Some impetuous batting (they were bowled out in the 44th over) led to a succession of catches being spooned up and the innings closing at 211.

Chris Wood (38) and Adam Rouse (27) made their mark, but Havant ruled the day and, on this form, look a sound bet to repeat last year's title triumph.
