Kim Bowden, the assistant secretary and treasurer of the Angling Trust Wessex Region Marine certainly showed that he has got what it takes when he went afloat from the Portsmouth based boat ‘Dawn Venture’ skippered by Ross Burnett.

During a hectic session he heaved one of the seasons heaviest cod over the gunnels which thumped the scales down to 28lb 8.5oz, a superbly conditioned fish.

Lee-on-Solent was the setting for the final round of the Southern League where Justin Rouland bagged the nights heaviest fish in the shape of a 6lb 5oz cod, other species recorded included rockling, silver eels, dogfish, pout and whiting. Results: A zone, 1st Darren Newland 9lb 7oz, 2nd Ian Dancy 8lb 7oz, 3rd Darren Stevens 7lb 15oz, 4th Paul Phillips 5lb 14oz. B zone, 1st Justin Rouland 9lb, 2nd Richard Dorgan 5lb 1oz, 3rd Danny Mogirdge 4lb 1oz, 4th Ian Golds 3lb 6oz.

Liam Smith romped to victory during the West Wight AC Xmas open as well as landing the evenings heaviest fish, an 11lb 5.5oz undulate ray in his 16lb 15oz winning catch. Rod Whitewood was the runner-up with 12lb 6oz followed by Jamie Currie with 8lb 7.5oz. The prize for the best specimen was won by Ainsley Bennett with a 3lb 11.5oz ballan wrasse while the junior section was won by Liam Dunne with 4lb 6oz.

A good variety of species including whiting, pout, dogfish, rays and bass were recorded during Rovers Tackle final midweek catch & release open shore competition which was fished at Stokes Bay. The longest fish section was won by Ian Golds with a 52cm dogfish followed by Danny Mogridge with a 48cm ray. Results: 1st Ian Golds 2920cm, 2nd Cormack Meenehan 1560cm, 3rd Peter Farrell 1396cm.

Stokes Bay will be the setting for the first pegged catch & release midweek evening match of the New Year on Jan 21 with fishing from 8pm to 11.30pm, pre book and full details from the crew at Rovers Tackle Tel 01329-220354.

Whiting, dogfish, pout and rockling supplied most of the action during the final round of the Lock, Stock and Tackle Friday evening catch & release open held at Hayling where Trevor Clements recorded the night’s longest fish in the shape of a 56cm dogfish. Results: 1st Justin Rouland 1281cm, 2nd Ian Golds 1214cm, 3rd Darren Wilson 901cm, 4th Brendon Moon 689cm.

A reminder that Lymington & District SFC stage their annual flounder only open shore competition to be fished around the Lymington & Pennington sea wall on Monday 28th December from 9am to 2pm with registration getting underway from the Lymington Club house situated at the far end of Bath Road car park from 8am. SHIRLEY SAC. Weston Shore and Netley were the setting for the clubs Xmas shore competition where bass, whiting, pout and flounders figured in the catch Tina Bell topped the festive podium with 3lb 6oz, included in her catch was the day’s heaviest fish, a 2lb 14oz bass. Others: 2nd John Bell 2lb 7oz, 3rd Wayne Bulley 2lb 2oz, 4th Bob Patterson 1lb 10oz, 5th Paul Dorey 1lb 8oz. Top junior, Leon Bulley 2.5oz.

LYMINGTON & DISTRICT SFC. Dogfish, whiting, pout, rockling, rays and bass supplied the action during a Winter League fixture held at Avon Beach, the nights longest fish was a 73cm small-eyed-ray recorded by Danny Panks. Results: 1st Tom Bagnall 758cm, 2nd Callum Graham 732cm, 3rd Ollie Hopkins 589cm, 4th Malcolm Stote 578cm.

SANDOWN & LAKE AC. Weights were well down during the weekend competition with just a smattering of smaller species recorded. Results: 1st Peter Kingswell 3lb 2oz, 2nd Jannet Rolles 2lb 9.5oz, 3rd Pat Whichcombe 2lb 2.5oz, 4th Tony Carter 1lb 13oz.
