Gordon Strachan resigns as Celtic manager

Gordon Strachan has quit as Celtic manager following their failure to clinch a fourth successive title.

The club announced on their website that former Saints boss Strachan - who won three titles and three domestic cups in his four years in charge - had decided to step down.

Strachan said: ''I have enjoyed my time immensely at Celtic and clearly I will be sad to leave this great club.''

The 52 year-old Scot, who led Saints to the FA Cup final in 2003, refused to discuss his future immediately after their final Clydesdale Bank Premier League game of the season, a 0-0 draw with Hearts.

But his departure is no surprise after he failed to gain total support from a number of Celtic fans despite his success at home and in Europe, where he twice led Celtic into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Strachan added on Celtic’s official website: ''As I have said before, Celtic is a special club, with special supporters.

''There is no club like it and it has been an absolute honour and privilege to be the club's manager for the past four years.

''We have done all we can to bring success to the club and we were delighted to deliver three SPL titles, other domestic silverware, as well as making some great progress in Europe.

''It is just disappointing that we did not manage the fourth championship.

''However, the players can hold their heads high in terms of what they have done for the club in recent years.

''I would like to thank the Celtic board for all the support they have given me during the past four years, in particular Dermot Desmond, John Reid, Peter Lawwell and former chairman Brian Quinn - I could not have asked for any more support.

''I thank all the players I have worked with at the club and, of course, my backroom team for the backing and assistance which they have given me.

''I thank the fans too for the tremendous support which they have given both myself and the players. I wish Celtic and our supporters nothing but success for the future.''

Strachan's success came despite having a much smaller transfer budget and wage bill than was afforded to predecessor Martin O'Neill.

Parkhead chief executive Peter Lawwell paid tribute to Strachan, who has been mentioned as a possible successor to Ricky Sbragia, who himself stepped down as Sunderland boss yesterday.

Lawwell said: ''Gordon has given everything to the club and worked tirelessly to bring success to Celtic.

''He has achieved so much at both domestic and European levels.

''It has been a pleasure to work closely with Gordon and he leaves the club with all our best wishes.

''We thank Gordon for his commitment and achievements at the club and we also thank our fans for backing us all the way this season.

''Our fans know how to support their club and we will be doing all we can to once again bring back the title to Celtic Park, something which our support deserves.''

Please return gordon, we need someone like you who knows what the fans and the club want unlike the dutch counterparts that wanted saints to play continental football last season.
Sure its time to turn over a new leaf and start again , get rid of wotte even though he means well bring in gordon. then if the bid goes through for the club get some player in that have the club at heart .

Given the way Strachan spat the dummy out here (after we resurrected his career) I'm not surprised he's walked out on Celtic.

It was interesting to hear Celtic fans saying how they disliked GS's press conferences, I thought the same when he was with us.

Good luck Sunderland, no doubt like Keegan he'll walk out on you too.

Yes - I never 'got' his style of humour and he was a bit lucky at Saints in the sense that he took over a decent side who were under-performing (eg Rednapp at Spurs) and took them to relative success. We were also in decline before he left and he handled the Leeds rumours very poorly.

Having said all that he was a very good motivator with us and that is something that has been missing for most of the time since he left...

I guess you need to have a sense of humor to understand one!

He is hilarious... I would have him back at Saints.......

He would be a complete breath of fresh air.... He will be3 looking for a much bigger club though... sadly.

Nice to comment on something other than the future of the club though.

Think he probably needs a hip operation, like the one he needed when he left SFC!!!

He does still have a house in Hamble which he still calls home (or he did when we played Veltic pre-season)
However even if he was inclined to set his career back 10yrs, we couldn't afford his moving expences let alone his salary!

Dream on boys, we're stuck with Wotte, a team of 18yr olds and no pot of gold to invest.
But Hey, we're getting to go to a lot of grounds next season that I've never heard of!

I think you'll find that it was Keane and not Keegan who walked out on Sunderland.
I think a large amount of Strachans' spark left him following the death of his great mate Tommy Burns.

Gordon Strachan will do what he’s done in the past and what all good managers do; take some time away form the game to recharge the batteries and wait for a decent offer to come along.

I doubt if SFC figures anywhere in his thinking, but he’s known to savour a challenge. And aren’t we a challenge nowadays!

Whoever he takes on you can rest assured of one thing; his team will be fit!

If we were to change the manager, (which given the players support of Wotte might be a mistake), then Dennis Wise is well proven at League 1 level (at both Swindon and Leeds).

i would love strach back. what people forget is that under his control we used to be a fit side that SCORED in the dying minutes and didn't ship goals. if we were in the championship i think we'd have a shout now rosey is gone but in league one we'd be lucky to get nick holmes from salisbury. anyway, i still think wotte needs a fair crack. i have a feeling he could be good given time. one thing i noticed is that there still seems to be good team spirit here. the likes of davis and surman saying they'd like to stay is surely a good sign about the manager. not like some clubs where players are desperate to leave. geographically speaking saints are in a good place top get people to stay. things will improve... just look at hull. and remember when man city went to where we are. they went back to the top before the new stadium and rich ownerfs arrived. take it from arnie... WE'LL BE BACK!

its clearly rubbish. for one it is not possiblen to negotiate without new owners in place. who would invite him down? fry? no... and if the prospective buyers wanted a word it would not be at SMS or even in the city. silly friend. he sees one ginge and thinks he's one the lottery! (sounds like my mrs!) oh and yes i am in strachans "tribe" folically speaking.

the only person dennis wise is proven to is the reflection of dennis wise. averagely skilled player and even less talented manager.

The 'mate' in earlier post could quite easily have seen Gordon in a car near Southampton, possibly en-route between Southampton Airport (from Glasgow airort) and his house in Hamble which he has kept and stays there whenever he can.
Don't read into it any more than the fact than a bloke out of work returning home for a few weeks off before looking for a new job!
As I said in an earlier post, even if he was inclined to set his career back 10yrs, we couldn't afford his moving expences let alone his salary!

well i think it could well be Gordon Strachan, after all, who would of thought our club, and the mess it is in, we would attract a multi millionaire!! If Le-Tiss and whoever else is involved can pull this one off, then they are capable of anything! come back Gordon, things could be different and you may even get some money to spend this time round!
