DIEHARD Saints fan Dean Faithfull denied his heroes with a last-gasp equaliser for AFC Totton and grinned: “It’s made my life!”
With only around a minute of last night’s pre-season friendly remaining, 22-year-old Faithfull popped up to meet fellow substitute Danny Cox’s cross with a bullet header at the back post to make it 2-2.
That was the second time in four days that Mark Wotte’s side had been pegged back by a late goal against non-League opposition.
And the irony of it was that Hedge End lad Faithfull, on as a 74th-minute replacement for Ian Richardson, is not even a Totton player!
The centre back is currently home on a summer break from university in America and is only helping the Stags out in the defensive department because Ross Bottomley and new signing Chris Collins from Sutton United are injured.
Faithfull, who has completed two years of a four-year football/communications scholarship at the Florida Institute of Technology, beamed: “I’ve supported Saints since I was a kid and scoring against them has made my life!
“I always dreamed of playing for Saints.
“I played at St Mary’s two years ago for VT FC Reserves in the Southampton Senior Cup final, which we won on penalties. But to actually play against them tonight – there’s not a better feeling!
“I just hope Saints are alright now.”
