Chainrai Profile Balram Chainrai is a Hong Kong-based businessman of Nepalese extraction but with a British passport.

The businessman, whose interests include property development, has lent Portsmouth at least £17m through Portpin, a company he owns with Israeli business partner Levi Kushnir.

They were part of the consortium put together by chief executive Peter Storrie which tried to buy the club in August.

The loans were secured against the Fratton Park stadium, the club's future television income and owner Ali Al Faraj's 90 per cent shareholding.

He moved to freeze the Saudi businessman's shares under the terms of the loans after Portsmouth failed to make repayments on the finance, despite extending deadlines.

Chainrai, 51, was pictured in directors' box at the KC Stadium to watch Pompey's scoreless draw with Hull, back in October, along with Storrie and Ahmed Al Faraj, brother of then owner Ali Al Faraj.

It is thought that Chainrai has little interest in owning or running a football club.

Chainrai was absent from a list of Hong Kong's 40 richest businessmen, published this week by Forbes.

The lowest ranking name on the list, Tang Hsiang Chien, had a net worth of $850 million (£530m).
