Portsmouth Football Club docked nine points by the Premier League

PORTSMOUTH FC have been officially docked nine points by the Premier League.

League bosses met this morning and have now confirmed that the Fratton Park club have been immediately deducted the points as a penalty for going into administration.

That leaves the club - which was already bottom of the Premier League beforehand - with just 10 points.

That means the club is a colossal 17 points off safety, having won just five league games all season.

As a result, they are all but relegated to the Championship.

They have been docked nine points rather than the 10 Saints were docked with as there are less games in a Premier League season than there are in the Football League.

The Premier League's full statement reads: "Following the High Court's decision that Portsmouth FC's administration is valid the Premier League Board convened today to apply the League's rules and policies in relation to a member club suffering an event of insolvency.

"As a result Portsmouth FC has been deducted nine points with immediate effect.

"As part of this process the Board met with the Administrator to agree how we will work together for the remainder of the season to ensure that the club is able fulfil its commitments."

Why punish them now as there good as gone. Better to wait until next season and deduct points i think. Only deduct 9 if they survive this this season. Look at Saints deduction as the example.

They got deducted this year, because they went into admin before March the 24th. We didnt, that was why, if we stayed up they would have been taken, as we went down, they got put on the next seasons. It is a rule to stop people doing what Leeds did, knew they were already down with two games to go and went into admin, so they had points taken off that season and not the next, obviously it backfired on them and the league choose to make an example out of them.

That rule doesn't apply to the Premier League - only the Football League, so it wouldn't matter when during the season Pompey went into administration.

If they stayed up they should get it this season.

Surely they should have points deducted next season if it works out they would have gone down anyway. Otherwise, wheres the punishment.

Lets hope they get loads deducted next season for not having this creditors agreement.

I would of thought they would of left it till next season and they started on -9 points in the Championship. There is no point in punishing them even more when they are going to get relegated anyway.

Don't worry just read the above comments. Still think they should be punished next season instead though.

That would make sense but I'm not sure how 'joined up' the Premier League and Football League rules are. I don't think the two organisations have much to do with each other, so I'd be surprised if someone getting into trouble in the Premiership would result in punishment from the Football League.

portsmouth in the championship, your having a laugh. how sure can you be that pompey will be in the championship next season? the club has no assets, owns no decent players, has very poor attendances - even in the premier league, not even to mention the so called stadium. the club is simply not sustainable at a higher level. southampton on the other hand - there is no comparison. get in the real world MATE.

I would imagine that once they will find it very easy in the Championship next season. They have such a talented squad, a decent stadium, fine off the field set-up etc etc etc they should walk away with automatic promotion.

There again i could just be taking the p*ss :-)

Oh well hope we get the numbers in next season - we can take your lead kids for quid, tenner here, tenner there, make it affordable. I said we were going down this year from the word go - in many respects looking forward to going into that division. Assuming we get a buyer of course, which I believe we will.

I honestly think Portsmouth's Administration will drag on and on until the near end and believe they will be deducted further points by the FA.

This is of course better that disappearing all together.

I wonder what will be the next scandal to come out of Fratton Park?.....and there's been so many already.

The future is Red & White and "The Muffs" know it!!!!.

It's a sweltering +47 in Southampton this year though. =) That's rich club, top ten place in our league, brilliant stadium, nice people, overall better place to be and doesn't stink on the farenheit, or financial scale as us Saints like to call it!! At least you have memories of your time at Landfill FC. Noone can take those away.........not that they'd want to.

A quick question for all the regs and rules buffs out there- are pompey deducted a further 10 points -next season if----they are still in admin at the end of the premier league season or is it if they are still in admin when they apply to enter the fizzy pop league-if so when is the application date?
What I am asking is have they still got all of the closed season to find a mug, sorry buyer.........or do they have to do this before the end of the premier league season ?
St yorkie,over to you..........

It's about time, seems the PL were leaving it to the last minute!
If our neighbours are still skint when they land in Fizzy Pop land then hopefully they will be deducted further points like we had, then it really will get entertaining! Just wish they'd stop this incessant whining just like a spoilt child, perhaps someone will point them to the naughty step! lmfao!
Anyway, couldn't happen to a nicer bunch, I know some will bang on about turning the other cheek, blah, blah , blah, but lets remember what the Plastic Cockney's were doing when we were going through the wringer! Need I say more? :oD
