AFC Totton scored two goal-of-the-season contenders on their way to a Mike Gosney-inspired 4-2 win against Fleet Town.

On-loan Gosney opened the scoring with a stunning 25-yard free-kick, in off the right-hand post 12 minutes into his first home game back at Testwood.

And the left-winger set up two more – including one for Nathaniel Sherborne, the one remaining Totton player since the exodus of 18 months ago - during a virtuoso performance.

Gosney, who is out of contract at Gosport at the end of the season, said: “Gosport aren’t going to change a winning team so it’s good to come back and get some games.

“The main aim is to get fit - I was blowing out there – but it was good to get back on the scoresheet and set up Sherbs like old times.

“Only Sherbs is left but I know everyone here. Hopefully I can get a few more goals and help the club to a few more points.”

Liam Gilbert followed Gosney’s goal by doubling Totton’s lead with another stunning left-footer from similar distance, across the face of goal and into the far top corner.

Within two minutes, Fleet player-manager and former Totton midfielder Craig Davis sent Steve Mowthorpe the wrong way after Ellis White gave away a penalty.

And just past the hour, Fleet equalised when Simba Mlambo netted from Jack French's pass.

But four minutes later Gosney beat his man and crossed for Zac Mouland, who played a more advanced role in the second half, to restore Totton's lead. Gosney completed his virtuoso performance and a flowing Totton move when he cut in from the right, ghosted past two challenges and provided the perfectly-weighted assist for Nathaniel Sherbourne to net a clinical fourth three minutes from time.

He created other opportunities during a New Year’s Day treat for the 217-strong Testwood crowd.

Riley said: “Gos is a crowd favourite, the fans love him and after that performance you can see why.

“He showed what a class player he is. He’s here for a month but we want him for as long as possible if he wants to and Alex [Pike] is happy for him to stay longer.

“Having a player like that in the side gives the others a lift and as a natural winger he also gives us balance.

“He’ll get better and better as he plays more games.”

Riley is hoping for another good result at Stratford Town on Saturday.

He continued: “We scored two absolute worldy goals by Gosney and Liam Gilbert. We were pacy going forward and caused them problems.

“We gave away two goals and it was anyone’s game then but we didn’t panic and showed know-how which I was pleased with.

“Both sides played good football, Fleet were on a good run of form but everybody did their jobs well and we worked well as a team.

“It’s a great start to the year.”
