LUKE Roberts scored twice against his former club as Poole Town won 2-1 at AFC Totton in a friendly last night.

A second half brace from Roberts gave the Dolphins a 2-0 advantage, with Craig Feeney replying from the penalty spot in the closing stages, writes JASON LEWIS.

Totton were without Dave Allen and Mike Gosney, but fellow summer signings Nick Watts and Mark Lilley both started alongside trialists James Roden and Marc Diaper.

The Stags started the game brightly with their first effort at goal coming within the opening 30 seconds.

As the game settled down, Poole enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and should have taken the lead midway through the half.

A long ball split the Totton defence and, with the goal at his mercy, ex-Stags striker Richard Gillespie was only denied by a perfectly-timed last ditch challenge from Roden.

Totton’s best chance of the first half came just before the interval. Smart footwork from Nathaniel Sherborne gave him room for a shot, but his left footed effort was tipped onto the post.

The second half saw Poole switch their entire side with a more youthful look about the team.

Although they started the half the brighter, Totton soon found themselves a goal down after a brilliant team move from Poole.

Following patient build up, Roberts flicked the ball to his strike partner and lost his man with a clever drop of the shoulder.

The ball returned to him with only the keeper to beat and he calmly tucked it into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Poole soon doubled their lead with Roberts driving the ball home.

Following neat play down the left, and several blocked efforts, Roberts had time and space in the box to score, his shot going in off both posts.

From that point on, Totton dominated the game and should have reduced the deficit through Feeney.

The striker was played through on goal after a long ball over the top, but he failed to lift his shot over the on-rushing keeper.

Minutes later Feeney got his reward with another long ball catching the Poole defence off guard and, after latching onto it, he was hauled down in the penalty area.

Feeney dusted himself down and converted the spot-kick.

Totton manager Steve Hollick was happy with the performance of his side.

He said: “We are pleased with how the boys have done, especially in the first half against a strong Poole side.

“The second half we looked a little bit jaded, but we have had some good games in the last couple of weeks.”

On the subject of further additions to the squad, Hollick was content, saying: “The squad is starting to settle down. We are there or thereabouts.

“We have one or two we are just agreeing the terms with then we will have a solid squad.”

Totton: Mowthorpe, Hibberd, Diaper (Dempsey 42), Williams, Rolls, Roden (Beckles 82), Watts, Burgess, Feeny, Sherborne, Lilley (Rankins 65)
