AFC TOTTON'S windswept 2-1 win over Larkhall Athletic tonight was a triumph for both youth and experience.

Jake Burgess and Nathaniel Sherborne, two players at opposite ends of the age spectrum, added three more welcome points to the Stags’ Southern One South & West kitty hot on the heels of Saturday’s 4-0 victory at Wantage.

Despite making most of the early running, Totton fell behind on eight minutes when Larks’ Jamie Lyons produced a good turn and finish.

The equaliser arrived on the half-hour with Sherborne, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Saturday, crossing for the baby the team, 18-year-old Burgess, to stab home.

It was the long-serving Sherborne who bagged the 52nd-minute winner following an excellent work by winger Nick Watts.

The Stags almost had a third 12 minutes from time when Mike Gosney’s free-kick shook the crossbar.

Larkhall piled on the late pressure but Totton’s defence stood firm to send a 200-strong Testwood Stadium crowd home happy as the Stags rose to 14th.

Winchester City’s scheduled South & West game at Marlow was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch as were all the evening’s Russell Cup ties and the Sydenhams Premier fixture between Alresford and Andover.

Poole Town strengthened their grip on the Southern Premier top spot with a 1-0 win at Chippenham.

Jack Dickson’s tenth-minute goal separated the sides and Poole came close to a second when Will Spetch hit the post.
