AFC Totton’s average league attendances have more than doubled this term – despite their woeful Testwood Stadium form.

The Stags are currently averaging 410 for their Southern League Division 1 (South & West) matches – a 52.42 per cent increase on last term.

The rise is mainly due to Totton having already held two of their most attractive games of 2016/17 – against Hereford and Salisbury.

A crowd of 731 saw Totton lose to Hereford on the opening day – the seventh biggest crowd in the division this season. The highest is the amazing 3,102 who saw Hereford – a phoenix club from the ashes of the former Hereford United – host Bishops Cleeve.

Totton also had a crowd of 410 for Salisbury’s visit, a game they lost 4-0.

That isn’t their worst home result of the season, though – they were caned 6-1 by both Larkhall and Wimborne Town.

Elsewhere, Salisbury’s crowds are down despite their promotion to the Southern League.

The Whites averaged 707 en route to winning the Wessex League title at the first attempt last season.

The average has dipped to 582 this term.

Winchester City’s crowds are up 68.86 per cent – from an average of 167 to 282 – in the same division as Salisbury and Totton.

There is an obvious reason for that.

Like Totton, they have also hosted Hereford (482) and Salisbury (580) so far.
