AFC TOTTON still have work to do if they are to progress to the FA Trophy first qualifying round – but at least they have won back some pride.

Just 11 days after a painful 6-1 home collapse to Wimborne Town that cost former boss Steve Hollick his job, the Stags pulled themselves together to come away from Cuthbury with a well-deserved 2-2 preliminary round draw.

Wimborne struck first with an 18th-minute Toby Holmes goal but, come half-time, Totton were on top through Curtis Angell and Dan Munday.

Stefan Penny levelled on 72 minutes with a beautifully lofted chip but the Stags staved off further Magpies pressure to earn a replay at the Testwood Stadium on Tuesday (7.45pm).

“The boys did well. We had a game plan and we executed it,” said caretaker boss Andy Darnton.

“We’re a bit disappointed after leading 2-1, but a draw was probably a fair result.

“We had no Nathaniel Sherborne, Ashley Jarvis or Dylan Knight (all injured), Neil Williams was unavailable and Gosport didn’t want Connor May cup-tied. We changed things around a bit and they all contributed to a good performance.

“Considering we got beaten 6-1 by Wimborne, we gave a good account of ourselves. If we’d been a bit more clinical we might have won it. But Wimborne piled on the pressure at the end and some stout defending was needed.

“The boys need to apply themselves like that again on Tuesday. The effort has to be there week in, week out.”

Sherborne and Williams should be back for the replay, but Jarvis and Knight need more time.

Tuesday's winners will be away to Tiverton Town who pulverised Paulton Rovers 6-1
