WAYNE Mew expects a new AFC Totton manager to be unveiled this week – but insists it won’t be him.

The former Romsey Town boss does not even hold an official first-team job title at the Testwood Stadium.

Yet on Saturday Totton’s deputy caretaker achieved what no one else has done this season by leading the Stags to a long overdue first home victory.

Standing in for official caretaker Andy Darnton, Mew oversaw a 3-1 success over Slimbridge that winched the Stags off the foot of the Southern One South & West.

He will be in temporary charge again away at Didcot Town on Tuesday - unless a permanent appointment is made in the meantime.

Asked if his name was in the hat, Mew, who turns 60 next year, laughed: “No! I’m not interested. I’m too old for that!

“I don’t even have a job title. I’m a jack of all trades, doing odd jobs behind the scenes. I do a bit of scouting and I’m youth secretary and child welfare officer.”

Gosport's Alex Pike, former Winchester boss Paul Masters and ex-Totton striker Michael Charles are among a host of names being linked with the managerial vacancy.

Mew remained tight-lipped, but said: “Hopefully someone should be appointed this week and I’ll work with him until he gets to know the players and can take it over.

“It would be nice if he’s in place by Tuesday or, if the appointment's imminent, he can come to Didcot and watch the lads. We’ve got no game for ten days after that, which is a long old time.”

Having taken an early lead against Slimbridge when teenager Calum Hellyar followed up Ian Oliver’s parried shot, Totton succumbed to Marley Thomas's near-post equaliser.

But once Nick Watts had restored the lead on 53 minutes with a sumptuous left-foot strike into the top corner, confidence returned and Watts struck again on 90 minutes from Neil Williams’ assist.

Asked the secret of his success, Mew said; “After last Tuesday’s disappointing result at Hamble Club (a 4-1 Russell Cotes Cup defeat), I tried to liven up the mood by making training fun and jovial.

“ I loved it today. There was a real buzz about the lads, especially after the game for a change.

“Mind you,” he laughed, “Wattsy's just cost me £20.

“I had a little bet with him and said if he scored I’d give him a tenner – and then he’s scored twice!”

Watts’s one regret was that Totton chairman Andy Straker wasn’t there to see the victory due to ill health.

“I’d like to wish him all the best and dedicate this win to him," he said.

“There have been lots of ups and downs lately. I can’t remember the last time we fielded the same 11.

“But today was good. I love Wayne (Mew), he’s a great character in the changing room.

“We’d been close to getting results and the formation worked well for us today with the new lad Charlie Gunson (from Andover Town) coming in."

Also new in for Totton is former AFC Bournemouth trainee midfielder Declan McCarthy, formerly of Poole Town.
