AFC TOTTON'S interest in the Hampshire FA Senior Cup is over.

The Southern One South & West side lost last night's quarter-final tie 3-1 to runaway Combined Counties League leaders Hartley Wintney at The Testwood Stadium, writes Adrian Rose.

Manager Louis Langdown made a number of changes to the side that lost to Wimborne Town in the league on Saturday.

OShea McDonald was handed his first Totton start, while Nathaniel Sherborne made way for Dylan Knight.

Jack Vallis, Pele and Alfy Whittingham all came into the side to replace Ashley Jarvis, Charlie Gunson and Harry Medway.

Including Gunson, a number of Stags' loanees were cup-tied, but Nick Watts returned to the starting XI following injury.

The opening exchanges of the game were fast and furious with both sides looking to attack from the off, but it was Hartley who almost struck gold in the tenth minute, having a scrambled effort cleared off the line.

Just seven minutes later Totton took the lead. Whittingham laid a ball out wide on the right for Nick Watts, who sent in a cross looking for Dylan Knight at the far post.

The former Fawley man got the final touch on the ball but the cross looked to be on its way in anyway, with keeper Paul Strudley beaten.

At the other end Hartley continued to threaten and saw another effort cleared off the line by Dave Allen.

They eventually drew level with a Ross Cook free-kick, that was bent low around the wall and into the far corner.

With momentum in their grasp, the visitors began to mount heavy pressure on the Stags goal and took the lead just four minutes later with Ross Cook coming out on top, one on one, with Charlie Searle, smashing the ball home in clinical fashion.

The Stags responded with Allen trying to poke a through ball to Knight, but Steve Noakes was quickest to the ball and cleared his lines.

A big flashpoint in the game presented itself on the stroke of half-time when young debutant McDonald conceded a penalty and was sent off for the challenge, leaving Totton to play at least 45 minutes with ten men.

Up stepped ex-Saint Sam Argent, who saw his spot kick saved by Searle down to his left-hand side.

Before the second half began, the Stags made a substitution with under-18 starlet Callum Hellyar replacing Watts.

Searle was called back into action fairly quickly after the break, making two top saves to keep Hartley at bay and seemingly prolonging the inevitable.

That inevitability came to fruition in the 53rd minute as a corner was floated into the Stags box from the Hartley left. The referee spotted a handball in the area and pointed to the spot for a second time.

Again Argent stepped up and this time he despatched the spot kick with no fuss.

With chances few and far between owing to their numerical disadvantage, Totton had to settle largely for potshots at goal.

The most notable came from ex-Saint from Pele, but the keeper was always comfortable in dealing with it.

As the hour mark came and went, Hartley enjoyed the lion's share of possession and occasionally threatened, mostly through Argent who continued to be a thorn in Totton's side.

The visitors generally looked comfortable seeing out the game and, although he Stags gave it a go, it was too much of a mountain to climb.

Langdown and his side will now dust themselves down and go again this Saturday when they host third-placed Tiverton Town in the league. It will be a 'Kids Go Free' day at the Testwood Stadium.
