THERE is every chance chairman Wayne Mew will not accompany AFC Totton to Barnstaple Town on Saturday.

With the Stags now assured of Southern One South & West survival, his focus of attention has already switched to the 2017/18 campaign.

Asked if he was looking forward to putting his feet up and relaxing, Mew smiled: “I won’t get a rest. We’ve got to start looking now for next season.

“I might not be at our next away game because I’m going to be out looking at players.

“Meetings have already been had to identify potential signings for next season.”

As a former Eastleigh reserves/youth and Romsey Town manager, Mew likes to think he knows young talent when he sees it.

“I’ve not done too badly finding players in the past,” he said. “We’re all going to go out looking.”

One player unlikely to feature for Totton again is record appearance-maker Mike Gosney whose contract is up at the end of the season.

The wing wizard - a veteran of over 400 Stags games - has not played in recent weeks, claiming he is no longer enjoying his football.

“He’s been paid everything he’s entitled to and I don’t know where he is now,” said Mew.

The half-time abandonment of last Saturday’s showdown with Bideford due to torrential rain leaves Totton with five games to play, giving them plenty of scope to climb out of 20th spot.

The Bideford game has been rearranged for this coming Tuesday at the Testwood Stadium (7.45pm).

The Stags host Bishops Cleeve next Saturday, travel to Craig Davis's Winchester City on Easter Monday (3pm) and wrap things up at home to Evesham on April 22.

Manager Louis Langdown said: “It’s been a slog, but the lads have done well. Hopefully we’ll get a couple more wins and enjoy staying up, then we’ll see who we’re going to take and not take for next year.”

Off the park, Totton are working hard to promote themselves in the local community.

With that in mind, they are hosting a Family Fun Day/Open Day on Saturday, May 6 (12 noon-5pm).

Two of the highlights will be a match to showcase the club's youth academy and a special guest appearance from 'Mr Piegate' himself, ex-Stags 'keeper Wayne Shaw, in a penalty shootout competition. Entry will be free.
