THE goal that knocked AFC Totton out of the FA Cup yesterday was scored by familiar foe.

Former Stags winger Jon Davies netted a classy winner as Louis Langdown’s depleted squad bowed out of the competition 2-1 at Frome Town.

Considering Jack Masterton and Dave Allen were both injured, Stuart Mott had returned to Army duties, Charlie Gunson was suspended and Havant & Waterlooville loanee Alfy Whittingham was unable to play, Totton acquitted themselves well against their Evo-Stik South Premier hosts and deservedly took an early-second-half lead when Craig Feeney delivered low from the left for Curtis Young to slot in at the far post.

Frome equalised out of the blue on 56 minutes when Jake Jackson’s ball over the top was latched onto by the impressive Darren Jefferies whose left-foot shot gave Stags ’keeper Shane Murphy no chance.

Jefferies then pulled a fine save out of Murphy before Feeney tested Kyle Phillips at the other end.

It could have gone either way, but it was ex-Stag Davies who settled it, latching onto Joe Raynes’ through ball on the right-hand side of the box and unleashing a majestic shot that left Murphy rooted to the spot.

“We did well considering the lads we had missing,” said Totton boss Louis Langdown.

“For 60 minutes we were the better side and we gave them a bit of a scare.

“They looked short on confidence and, if we’d got a second, I believe we would have gone on to win it comfortably.

“But we couldn’t deal with one long ball and, once Frome had scored, they looked a different outfit.

“It was always going to be the case that an ex-Totton player got the winner, wasn’t it?” he smiled ruefully. “But he’s a match-winner and, to be fair, his goal was excellent.

“It’s an opportunity missed for us because, with a full side, I think we’d have been too much for them.

“But credit to those who turned out. We had five lads in there on no money and we put up a really good show against a side from a league above.”
