LOUIS Langdown isn’t reading too much into AFC Totton’s rise to third in the Evo-Stik South West.

While the Stags boss is immensely proud of his side for back-to-back 3-1 home wins over Bristol Manor Farm and Swindon Supermarine, so tight is the race for the play-offs that as many as ten clubs could still be in with a shout.

On Saturday (3pm) Totton travel to Cirencester Town who sit eight places below the Stags in 11th, yet are just six points behind.

“It’s a false position until all the games are played, but we’d rather be up there than not,” said Langdown.

“We go to Cirencester on Saturday and they’re unbeaten in eight. They gave us a really good game at our place and we were indebted to our goalkeeper Shane Murphy that day for coming in 1-1 at half-time. They should have been out of sight.

“But we came back out and scored through Craig Feeney to win 2-1 and Cirencester will have been disappointed with that. It was a game we probably didn’t deserve to win. We were so off it and Murphs was excellent, he saved shots for fun.

“We know they are a good side and they play on a 3G surface, so they will pop it about, but we think that might suit us.

“If we get another win we’ll stay where we are in third. If not, we’re likely to drop down to tenth!” he smiled.

“It’s a funny league at the moment, but the beauty of it is that we’re playing everyone around us. Bristol and Swindon were both fourth when we played them, so it’s like a mini play-off in itself.”

Goals by Tony Lee, Curtis Young and Charlie Gunson put paid to Supermarine and Langdown said: “I was really pleased with the performance. We keep saying how young this side is, but we stood up really well in a blood and thunder game with both sides fully committed.

“We were better than them in front of goal which is good because we’ve had games in the past when we’ve not been clinical enough.”

One man who would have approved of Totton’s spectacular rise up the table was former club chairman and avid fan Andy Straker, who sadly passed away last weekend.

“Everyone’s been feeling low, but the way the players have fought and put everything into the last two games has helped,”said Langdown.

Andy’s funeral will take place on Tuesday, April 17 (2.15pm) at Aldershot Crematorium.

Totton chairman Wayne Mew has arranged a coach for those who wish to attend the service and the wake afterwards at the Hogs Back Hotel.
