Totton set to clinch Wessex title
Sean New
Sean New

THE SYDENHAMS Premier Division championship trophy looks certain to presented at Totton's Testwood Park once again this season.

Less than 12 months ago, the Stags saw the prized pot snatched away from them by Gosport Borough - despite their final day 1-0 victory over Alex Pike's team - who won it by virtue of a plus one goal difference after the two clubs finished all square with 89 points.

So what a contrast this time around!

AFC Totton will go into this weekend's crunch home game against Brock-enhurst with a colossal 11-point cushion at the summit knowing that victory will see them crowned as champions.

"What a day, what can I say," smiled Totton assistant manager Sean New.

"The results have really gone well for us with VT and Wimborne both losing - and even Saints have won!

"It's a real bonus to have the opportunity to be crowned champions at home - I'll ring up Setanta and see if they want to show the game live!

"It won't be easy against Brockenhurst as they have shown this weekend by beating Bournemouth Poppies 2-0.

"The situation will also bring its own pressure on the players in front of what will hopefully be a large and expectant crowd - but it is a nice pressure to have."

For the best non league round-ups, don't miss today's Daily Echo.

I am very excited about this saturdays game V Brockenhurst. It will be a very tough game, I am sure Brock will want to poop the party BUT I have every confidence in the Totton players, they have bags of character and I am convinced they can do the job required. It would be great to see 1000 people there celebrating come 4.45pm. The club are letting fans in for just £1 providing they show their 2007 FA Vase final ticket stub, as Jason Tull the club secretary said "there are thousands of ticket stubs out there"! So get yourselves down to Testwood park this saturday, its not often we have much to celebrate in Totton. hopefully come 4.45 we will be able to celebrate BIGTIME!!!

Good luck to Totton - they've deserved it this year and it's been a good season for the Wessex League. Will it be British Gas Southern League S&W division for Totton next year?

Good luck to Stu, Sean and the team - it is no more than they deserve for all the hard work they have put in over the past few years.

I will find it interesting next season to see how many of the Totton players will re sign and do all the travelling. Bet a few of them go and sign for another wessex league club. After the stick some of the players from other teams in this league have got from people who have some kind of connection with Totton lets see how much your players want to put football before their 9-5 job. Maybe then people will be able to see that this standard of football, even though well paid, is not well enough paid to be your major income. Oh and can anyone tell me how much the players get for the 3 months there is no league matches. I'm sure it will be nothing so they are glad for their 9-5 income that they put before football then !!!

Looks as if VT players are now trying to spread their cloud of bitterness over to Totton now.

Looks and sounds terrible, have VT and it's players no saving graces whatsoever? Is it so hard for you to offer a deserving team congratulations?

I think that VT FC have been a much better footballing side than any other, in the wessex league this year. In the FA cup they outplayed Bashley on two occasions, who are two Leagues higher. In the long run VT will over power Tottons success.

Why is it you lot can never discuss non league football without it being turned into a "let's pick on VT" session? My local team have become the Pariahs of the Wessex league. Is Dave Diaper the poor mans Abramovitch?

I think it is very likely that Totton (if promoted) will not have the same squad next season. Some players will not be good enough for Southern League football, some will not want the travelling. If you look at Tony Kempsters site he's suggesting the S&W division could cover an area from Birmingham to Truro and down to Gosport - a huge area for players to travel to games in and some (like those at Gosport last season) will choose to stay in the Wessex with other clubs and get the same (or a little less money) than to travel. Some players are certainly committed to bettering themselves - others aren't or cannot because of work or family commitments. Neil Scammel was at Gosport when they won the league but left to go to VT as the money was as good as he could get in the SL, he didn;t have to travel AND the chap couldn't get the time off work. Totton's squad will change - what is interesting is how Gosport, Winchester and Totton will get on squabbling over the same limited pool of talent. I don't think there's much talent at Newport that will become available if/when they go down.

Perhaps their all go to VT after all Diapers got plenty of money.
Then the superstars hes got now can go and play for nothing down the road.
That must be worrying Vt boys you might have to go and earn your wages.
What happens I quote 'IF VT GET THEIR GRADING DONE' and you gain promotion will you stay and do the travelling.
I doubt it your club seems happy to beat teams by 8 0r 9 goals then Diaper can explain what a great tactician he is.
Your a joke!

Think you'll find Tony that this contained nothing about VT until one of their big time charlies players came on to it and tried to put a downer on Totton.

Symptomatic of what a horrible little club/ego trip it is, would it be so hard to offer Totton a little congratulations rather than try and get the focus back onto them.

Congratulations to Totton on winning the league!!

Bottom line is, you guys have more points than us!!!

Nothing to do with any of the b@+£$cks above!!

Good luck next season.

Should be a great day at Testwood Park on Saturday, looking forward to it but the title's not in the bag just yet, Brockenhurst are a very good side.
VT have pretty much got the Step 4 grading now, it was just too late for this season. Hopefully VT and Wimborne (who have definitely got the grading) will be following Totton into the Southern League in the next few years. Poole should be as well when they move to a new ground at Branksome Rec.

I'd just like to say fair ply to Totton if they win the league. The team with the most points after 9 months deserve to win. It so frustrating to read some of the comments above about big time charlies etc. It' b*l*$&s as one of the lads above said. Also, I think you'll find that as most people don't put a name on here it's people taking the pi$$ and trying to make us look like big time charlies!
