Southampton FA Centenary - Innovative plan didn't last long

IN 1924-25 the Junior Divisions 1 and 2 were established, with promotion and relegation between them.

In 1927-28 the council made the innovative decision of introducing a semicounty league - the South Hants League - two regional divisions - the Eastern Division and the Romsey Division - and an additional minor division.

But the following year it was decided the experiment was not a success and the South Hants league was dropped after just one season.

The 1929-30 season saw a phenomenal increase in local football and the association reacted by increasing and reorganising some competitions.

The Chamberlayne Cup was axed and replaced with a Junior consolation trophy.

The Wednesday League was increased to two divisions and the minor league dropped back to one division.

There was an influx of junior clubs in the 1931- 32 season, which allowed the association to form a fourth division of the junior league but also meant the demise of the Romsey Division.

Division 5 was formed in 1932-33.

In 1933-34 the minor league and tournament and the Wednesday tournament were axed due to the poor standard of play and Wednesday football being difficult to fit in.

It also saw the Travis Cup final being played at the Dell before the Senior Cup.

The following season, a sixth junior division was added and this was the last season the annual 6-a-side tournaments were played.

1935-36 marked the silver jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary and to commemorate the occasion the Silver Jubilee Cup was launched - it ran for four seasons and was won by Sholing Sports on all four occasions.

1936-37 saw the Southampton Senior Cup final being abandoned, probably due to adverse weather.

The fixture was replayed at Totton FC's ground with Agwi (now Fawley FC) defeating Itchen Sports 3-1 World War II started during the 1939/40 season - when Adolf Hitler's army invaded Poland on September 1, 1939.

All football was cancelled due to the outbreak of war between 1939-45.
