Totton smash Vase record after FA admit blunder

Totton fans at Wembley in 2007

THE RECORD attendance for an FA Vase final was broken this month - without a ball being kicked in anger!

As expected, AFC Totton and Truro City smashed the record Vase final attendance figure in May 2007 when it was announced that 27,754 fans had turned up for the first ever Vase final to be staged at the new Wembley, writes DEREK HAWKINS.

However, the Football Association have now admitted they got their sums totally wrong and the crowd for Totton's biggest-ever day was in fact a staggering 36,232 - nearly 8,500 more than previously thought.

"The new official record attendance for a FA Vase final is the 36,232 crowd for Totton's clash with Truro City last season," confirmed FA Council member John Ward, Hampshire' representative at Soho Square.

"Unfortunately, the mix-up came about because one of the turnstiles at Wembley wasn't working properly on the day and, for some reason, the previous figure didn't include the walk-up' fans who turned up on the day itself.

"It's taken a while to sort out, but all the figures have since been re-checked and the new figure is correct.

"The clubs were sent their monies some time ago now and both did extremely well financially.

"Both Totton and Truro earned money from a percentage of the sell-on of their tickets to fans and they also received a share of the gate.

"Clubs who do well in the FA Vase can earn a lot of money from it."

Well done AFC Totton.

I am a Non league follower and with Tottons population the prospects per sq mile are the most positive on the non league circuit.
There does not seem to be a local club within the region with greater prospects including Eastleigh.
So yes this may be right.

Firstly, AFC Totton deserve credit for their achievemnets over the past couple of seasons. But, because of the attendance of lot's of people but very few actual AFC Totton fans, at a one-off game over a season ago, they are suddenly the biggest club in the area?
I'm sure you're right. Totton are a far bigger club with greater prospects than eastleigh.

oh, yeh, and by the way, A Brit will win Wimbledon this year, The Pope is converting to Mormanism, and Harry Redknapp is going to be given the freedom of the City of Southampton:-)

Bejesus - is all that true? Perhaps England will win Euro 2008 as well!

"Totton are a far bigger club with greater prospects than eastleigh."

Such a silly thought its just laughable.

Mind you it was fun to go to Wembley for a tenenr so cheers for that one chaps.

If you go by how things procedd Totton have a greater base to count on than Eastleigh.
If it is Managed properly Totton would be a bigger club by 2011.
This by 23 per cent increase in Tottons success and bigger distribution.
Eastleigh does not hold any value in enough support.

When did Totton become the biggest New Forest club over Bash?
Posted by: Lymington fan, new forest on 10:36pm Sun 29 Jun 08
Bashley are orchestrated by a money man when will you understand that you cannot move any further under those circumstances.
Things will never change there.
If things dont go well he pulls out thats your dillema.
Posted by: Bashley Fan on 3:08pm Mon 30 Jun 08
Are The Bash alone in that then?
Would the likes of Eastleigh, Havant, Totton, Dorc etc and god help us VT be funded and pushed forward by fans funding alone or do they involve money men somewhere along the line?

Look at Saints even, desperate for a money man to become involved whilst their well loved neighbours Pompey have really struggled since a big money man has come on board haven't they, bet they long for the days when they had no-one and constantly fought relegation to the old third division.

Bashley are THE club in the forest fanwise and i think it will be a very very long time that anyone will be able to threaten us on that score if ever at all, we have more latent support than the likes of Totton and Brock have active and latent fans combined.

The Totton fans argument that they took so many thousands to wembley is blind to the fact that the huge proportion of that support were there solely as a day out and to get a look at the new Wembley - if it had been played at St. Andrews or Villa park would those numbers have travelled?
Posted by: Totton fan, Calmore on 5:37pm Tue 1 Jul 08
I agree Bashley fan.
Fan base grows with success and Bashley have had that for along time.
Tottons numbers are growing daily we have sold a number of season tickets and are support has grown by over 6o per cent in the last 4 years.
We have never had so much interest in this comming season and we can only estimate that are crowds will grow again.
The interest for the season has been massive and Totton has a very large population and is a growing area.

See you soon.

Sorry Bashley fan but when has Totton been in the New Forest.
We dont think were a forest side and hardly a village ?

Nonleague pundits are threatened by new competition and maybe that is the case here.
They like to be king pins and things stay that way.
All clubs start somewhere even Bashley and Eastleigh but anybody who threatens them must be put down quickly.
All the best Totton and all the other clubs who are passionate about moving on.
Posted by: Bashley Fan on 5:57pm Tue 1 Jul 08
The biggest hurdle that Totton faces in the coming season is not to grow it's current support but keep what it already has, every chance that crowds could be down on last season when you were doing so well and everyone was jumping on the bandwagon.

The challenge to the club is to keep a crowd there when you are drawing 0-0 at home against the likes of Beaconsfield SYCOB, settle yourself in and consolidate and look to push on crowd wise the following season. You should do ok in the league this coming season which should help in getting a crowd in future, but you will lose some that will miss the 37- 0 thrashings of the likes of Downton.

When did Totton take itself out of the Forest and did it not used to be Britain's biggest village?
Posted by: Tommy, Southern League on 2:06pm Wed 2 Jul 08
Have not Bashley gone up and down the leagues and kept there support or as Non league said you BIG BOYS are different.
So if Bashley finish mid table next year will there support go down and if not why would other clubs.
All the best to anyone trying to better themselves.

Have to agree with this, after all, we have gone from being known as "a friendly little club, with a nice pitch and an easy place to pick up 3 pts" to being Satan reincarnated. And all because we have dared to get our act together and moved up the pyramid.

If Totton can do the same, good luck to them, BUT, it will take a lot of hard work both on and off the pitch and to say they will be bigger than Eastleigh in a couple of seasons, based purely on the attendance from the Vase final, as this story is, is a complete joke.

Winchester City took half the City (myself included) to St Andrews for their Vase final, but 4 years on, are they bigger than Eastleigh, or Totton, or Bashley or Andover etc?
Posted by: population tess, Soton on 7:14am Thu 3 Jul 08
The theory behind this has nothing to do with Wembley the simple matter is Football clubs are made on populations.
Im just saying if you look at the size of Totton compared with other local Non league clubs there population and size they should do very well.
Posted by: Bashley Fan on 12:13pm Thu 3 Jul 08
Population means nothing at all Tess, if it did we would still be in the Bournemouth Leagues. Because a big town have a team it does not follow that they have big crowds, in fact many sizable towns have a pathetic following for their club whether any team is successful or not.

The best supported club in England are Burnley who regularly pull in some 10% of that towns population for a home game, if that followed through football what size would St.Marys need to be?.

The crowds at Bash go up and down with the clubs fortunes on the park which i think is the case for most football clubs, i well remember us struggling at the foot of the southern league in front of crowds of sixty odd not so long ago and a little while before that i remember us playing in front of crowds of 400 and 500 hundred every week.

Take it from me that unless Totton take the league by storm next season the most likely effect on their crowds next season is to show a decrease in attendance, if they manage to keep crowds at last seasons levels (minus away fans of which there are more of in the southern) then the club has done very well.

Football fans in non league tend to be very fickle in the main and will only come out and support a winning team.

Good comments Bash fan and lets see how things go ?
Posted by: confused, Southampton on 9:03am Fri 4 Jul 08
10% of the towns population eh? Southampton population about 230,000 so that would mean St. marys needed to be a 23,000 capacity?

Even Pompey get 20,000 which is 10%. I'm sure there are a lot of clubs that get more than 10%, Crewe, Stoke and Derby all spring to mind as possibles.

Do you want to check your facts again?
Posted by: Bashley Fan on 10:37am Fri 4 Jul 08
You're right, Burnley must get far in excess of ten percent to make them the best supported club - unsure as to what that figure might be though but they are the best supported club.

Not sure how you would calculate Saints figures as they have a catchment area that dwarfs most other clubs (because that has not been utilised in the past does not mean that it isn't there)there must be more Saints shirts in Bath than Bath City ones alone and the same in Salisbury, add up all those areas and Saints would need to expand Wembley to house their ten percent.

You'd have thought that with Woopert being a business man (?) would have capitalised upon such a wide catchment area when Saints were in the Premiership.

Listen Bashley fool and Totton **** there is only one club who will take over as the biggest club in the area and thats VT.
We are capable of competing with big wage demands and we will become the best.

Can anyone else hear a terrible noise coming from the cellar?

I would investigate but it's obviously in the cellar for a reason.

What a arrogant comment, im flabagasted to hear such a thing from a local Non league supporter.
Totally dismayed but this was the same arrogance we had from VT when we played them in the F.A cup.
I understand now why your club gets so much abuse.
You and your club show no respect to anyone, but i suppose this stems from the Manager.
Deary deary me.

Where the hell is Bashley anyway? Bet you live closer to New Milton FC and have jumped on the Bashley glory-supporting bandwagon.

AFC Totton will rise - watch this space!

As for Eastleigh & Winchester? Who????

Bashley twats Totton twats.AS i said watch VT go with Diaper at the helm we will be the biggest.
Why did Paul Sales sign for us ,because we are bigger than Bashley ,Totton and eventually Eastleigh.

We should have beaten Bashley in the F.A cup and as our manager said we were far the better side on the day,
VT will win the wessex this year and then the southern league next.
Watch this space Bashley Fan.

For the benefit of the Southern Echo, Bashley is a football club within your catchment area playing in the Southern Premier. Should you need any further help I suggest you contact Ordnance Survey (that's if you know were they are!)
