Eastleigh have signed local lad Brian Howard following his release by Oxford United – and he is set to make his debut tomorrow.

The 31 year-old midfielder, who began his career as a Saints trainee, grew up in Eastleigh before going on to play for Swindon Town, Barnsley, Sheffield United, Reading and Portsmouth, who he captained in League One.

He is expected to go straight into the Spitfires' squad and be available for Sunday's home game against Altrincham.

Manager Richard Hill said: “I am delighted to have secured a player of Brian’s calibre. He is a talented footballer who has played for some impressive clubs at a very good level. I am sure he will be a great addition to the squad.

"He has trained with us numerous times over the last couple of seasons. He is obviously a local lad which is also great for the fans and I am sure he will be given a warm reception this weekend.”

Winchester-born Howard did not break into the Saints first team but played for England at U16, U17, U19 and U20 level.

He was named in the Championship team of the Year in 2008, the year he scored a memorable goal for Barnsley in a 2-1 FA Cup win against Liverpool.
