Eastleigh will look to avenge their heaviest defeat of the season and jump into the Vanarama Conference play-off spots when they take on Wrexham at the Silverlake Stadium tonight.

The Spitfires must defeat the Dragons by two goals or more if they are to leapfrog Forest Green Rovers into the play-off places on goal difference.

Richard Hill’s side suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Racecourse Ground back in September and will be hungry to atone for that – as well as the 2-1 loss to leaders Barnet on Saturday that ended their four-game winning streak.

This fixture was originally postponed in January as Wrexham were in FA Trophy action – the competition they play North Ferriby United in the final of at Wembley later this month.

Because of the rearrangement, the game comes in the middle of a run of fixtures that Hill labelled “horrendous”.

After facing Conference title-chasers Bristol Rovers and Barnet and travelling to Kidderminster Harriers in the last ten days, the Wrexham game arrives as the Spitfires prepare to travel more than 1,000 miles in a week.

Trips to Grimsby this Saturday, and Gateshead seven days later, will follow tonight and mark the end of a month that has seen them play away four times, but just twice at the Silverlake Stadium.

“This month was a horrendous month,” said Hill. “It was always going to be tough.

“When the fixtures came out and you’ve seen March with Bristol Rovers, Barnet at home, Grimsby and Gateshead away, you think ‘what a month’.

“The fixtures come out and you sometimes think ‘has it been done on purpose?’ “We couldn’t have picked a tougher month.”

Despite the difficult games, Eastleigh have fared well after they won 2-1 at Rovers before beating Harriers 3-1.

Their only glitch so far came against Barnet.

Experienced boss Hill was keen to give his players praise after a good run of form ended and is looking for them to retaliate for Saturday’s loss tonight.

“You have to bounce back in the next game,” he said.

“Players don’t play badly on purpose, so we’ve got an opportunity to put it right.

“But the fact of the matter is that my players are great.

“They’ve been brilliant.”

Kevin Wilkin’s side arrive buoyant after reaching the Trophy final and on the back a 4-1 win at Altrincham at the weekend.
